"Risk is subjective?" No, it's not. One's perception of the risk may be, but the actual risk is not subject to one's perception of it.

Yet it is the subjective perception of the risk rather than the actual statistical probability of risk itself that people base their choices on.

So in application, the 'actual risk' is less relevant as a discussion point, since that is not what people think about in their assessment of risks anyway.

Although I know the risk is low, it's still not zero, which is why I choose ATGATT anyway. Other people obviously think their risk is considerably lower to the point of being nearly impossible (improbable ?) and therefore chose to ride in t-shirts, shorts and sandals.

Good post Michael. Being as safe as we can be should be our primary concern. People think it wont happen to them like a friend that lost a leg. What is worth that?

If you really believe that we should always believe that we need to be "as safe as we can" then you shouldn't ride. The second you get on a motorcycle, no matter how much gear you wear, you have made a decision to be less safe than you probably would be in the cheapest compact car.

Which is the point. We all take on risk. How much risk we are willing to take on (and how we recognize the risk) is all subjective.

I climb mountains and travel in avalanche terrain. Lots of people think I'm nuts. Me, I've studied the risks, know about as much as you can know about avoiding and mitigating them, and have decided that the pure pleasure of being out in a place where cellphones don't ring, and the crowds aren't trying to mow me down is worth the extra risk I take when compared to my friends going up and down regulated mountains on chairlifts and groomed trails all day. My choice. I know my way is riskier. I do what I can to mitigate the risks, within reason. There are others who go to places that are even crazier, places where I know people die every year no matter how skilled they are. I choose not to. Don't think they're crazy, but their assessment of what risks are worth taking is different from mine.

The key though is to really understand the risks and not kid yourself about it. Far too many people do that.

Same with motorcycles, or anything else.

The thing that always gets me about your photos, Kerr, is where these guys are at without gear. I personally wear full gear all the time, but I can understand the ones commuting that don't. They're betting the odds are low they'll have an issue, and they are low; but the guys from your photos are on a twisty road, leaned over hard, and obviously trying to push the envelope. You'd think they might realize the odds of them parting with the bike are substantially higher.

Same with me. Ill admit on the rare occasion i ride to work now, i wear an armored jacket, gloves, boots, helmet and jeans. Not comfortable with it. But i do it. When i was out on that week long trip my dad and i just took it was the same. But we were really just cruising the whole time. Not ideal, but there really wasnt and option. But when i saw the guy on 94 who had drug a knee in jeans, i just couldnt imagine riding like that without full leathers on.

Given what I've witnessed in person, I think gloves and knee guards are more important than ppl realize. The way I've seen ppl fall in solo crashes there is a big chance at busting open knee caps and damaging hands...

Yeah. My parts guy back in Spokane said he'd ride without a helmet before he'd ever ride without gloves.

I just rode down the street to the store, put on my leathers. Now I am going for a short 80 mile ride, putting on my leathers. Yea I'll be hot and yes I confident in my riding abilities, but you never know who is in the lane next to you, and for that I think it is worth always gearing up.

What's scary is that ACH is a road where bikers die or go down every week. Yet lotsa ppl continuously skimp on safety gear and treat it like a playground. If u don't respect the road & the dangers it'll bite u in the arse pretty fast.
