What Not To Wear (while riding)

Dang. Poor bicyclist... Almost getting run off the road... Not good... lol

i mountain bike myself and appreciate that bicycling is good for the environment and health etc. and, when i ride my bicycle on the roads, i always try to be considerate and yield and ride defensively and get out of the way of cars etc.

but, i have to say that the majority of bicyclists i see on the road- in southern cali at least- have serious attitude problems.

when they ride they don't "share" the road at all. in fact, they hog it and ride as if it's everyone's friggen job to make room for them and give them the right of way. when they ride in a group, they never ride "single" file in the bike lane or on the right of the road like they're supposed to. even on a two-lane road, they double-up and make cars pile up behind them waiting for them. it's utterly annoying and inconsiderate.

when i used to work on the west side, almost every day on Beverly Blvd heading east near Fairfax, there was this a-hole on a road bike that would split traffic & weave in and out of cars as if he were riding a Tron-mobile. he would also shout and curse if cars didn't see him when changing lanes, and sometimes even pound on their roofs of the cars. i mean, the way he was riding his bicycle, no one could see him.... i'm surprised no one brought a stick to plug into his wheels or eggs to throw at him. cuz, if anyone deserved it, this jackass did...

I guess I just don't understand the beef w/ cyclists, AS LONG AS:
1) They courteously move to the shoulder when motorized traffic approaches
2) They obey all other rules of the road like all other wheeled traffic must
3) The motorized traffic gives them an acceptable space when passing
4) Both parties are courteous

Now, yeah, going 3-wide up a hill refusing to pull over when there are 6+ cars are behind them (as traffic laws in many states dictate), that's just d!ck, regardless of whatever vehicle you're piloting. But in some of these shots, so long as no one else is around, sure, why can't they be in the middle of the road?

BTW, the guy nearly dragging his knee in jeans... I dunno, look at the jeans again... they look pretty bulky. I'm giving benefit of doubt here and saying that he very likely could have been armored underneath.

^ . . . . ouch! :(

What you can't see really well in those pictures is just how tight that road is. And how much slower they're going around those corners than the motorcycles. Especially the guys going up the hill around a blind turn in the middle of the lane. :banghead: (Looked but couldn't find any pictures of them.) They're the ones that really piss us off. But these guys in the pictures are just ridiculous when you come up on one, slow way down, beep your horn to let them know you're coming, and they flip you off as you're going by. And it's probably 99% of them that do this shit. Then if there's an accident on the road between a bicycle and a motorcycle, the motorcycle is the one getting crap. That's what the beef is and it's well deserved.

As for the guy in jeans, I'll give you that. He could very well be armored up underneath like I used to ride. I was just using the picture as an example of something I actually saw on 94 once. I got to the cafe at the top of the hill and saw a couple of guys there, one was tending to his knee. Turned out he actually dragged a knee by accident not knowing he was getting so close and shaved the skin right off his knee cap. Not a pretty sight.

AHHH! OK, I get it now.

Damn, you're right; I'd agree then! I thought maybe they were just going downhill or something! Blind turn, super tight... that's just not nice that that they're there. I wonder why they'd choose such a twisty road to PEDAL?

How about this... mount one of those poster tubes on the pillion seat, transversely, sticking out to the right quite a bit... and then... :D

Is it just me, or are the smilies that toofless uses progressively losing more teeth?! :rof:

Anyway, about cyclists. I am a cyclist as well, bound by traffic laws that all other wheeled vehicles follow. However, I will not hold up traffic or hog the road. Now, when I ride with groups of friends, we ride staggered when there is no traffic, then single file next to the white line when cars approach us. We stay conscious of vehicles behind us and shout up to the front of the group to be aware that cars are coming. We can ride at 20+ mph at times, but that is still not fast enough to hog the road.

Now, when you start seeing things like this, then it's time to invite them into your riding group!!

Seriously, mayyyybe the guy on the left is hanging on, but the guy on the right... unless he's severely late-apexing, it looks like he's just starting his low-side... LOL

the guy on the left is looking down at the ground too...

i c asian writing on the road signs. maybe this was in japan or in asia?

funny either way... :)

Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture because i was riding...guess I really need to get a camera for the bike. :o

Anyway, I was riding with a friend yesterday and we came upon some couples riding on "two-wheeled lay-z-boys." I was trying to figure out what one of the female passengers had on her head. Got close enough to see that the helmet she was wearing would be more appropriate for a child riding a bicycle!:eek:

That's right! The passenger was sporting a bicycle helmet on the back of a Goldwing. :jawdrop:

:mikebike:

Just a little more bleach in the gene pool, please.

My neighbour stuck his five year old on the bike (in front of him) with a hockey helmet on last year. Bad enough for an adult not to have propper gear but a child, com'on DUDE what did you not want kids or what?

Also a close relative on hubby's side was on the back of her better halfs bike one day with a 18 year old helmet that had a kitchen sponge  glued into it..... I asked wtf that was for and she replied that the lid was too big so better half had glued said sponge in there to make it fit better.:banghead::banghead::banghead:
I told her no the lid is not too big, all of the polyetheline liner (ya know the stuff that protects your melon if you go down) had broken down and worn away. Just as well not wear anything, I gave her hubby a blast of crap that day let me tell ya!:mad::mad:

I think I got the best one :eek::eek:
