F#$K!!!!! :mad::banghead::banghead::banghead:

I traded my beloved 06 Tacoma in because we couldnt afford it anymore on a 2001 Civic with 100k miles on it in great shape. Barely 3 months we've had it and the tranny goes out!!!!

Input shaft bearing is shot, needs seals, replacing all internal bearings. Since its open we need to replace the clutch, throw out bearing, pilot bearing as well and turn flywheel...

Total cost is $1480. FML :( Even independent shops want upwards of $2k to do it! Some WOULDNT even do it and want to just replace transmission. (which comes out to the same damn price but guarantee of the condition) And they only give 12 month/12k mile warranty. At least honda is giving us 3 year/ 50k mile warranty and I know it will have new parts in it. F@cking sucks :(

No clue how im supposed to pay for this crap now... Wife needs the car, she is working full time now AND going to school. Have to come up with her tuition money on top if this. Seems like I can never get ahead. I start to and soemthing just crushes us back down.

Welcome to the club Jay. Just when you think you are getting the upper hand on finances along comes that curse to slap you back into the "what the hell mode". Good luck is all I can say! :welcome:

Jay I wish I was close to you! I could put that tranny together for you and make you pay 0 labor fees! BTW are you getting the parts from the dealer or what? I'm telling you DON'T buy from the dealer. Their parts are generally 40% more expensive then what you can get it elsewhere!

I know I could do the used route, but there is no guarantee of the condition of those tranny's and I dont want to be out even more money. This way I have the 3 year/50k warranty. The dealer is actually the lowest cost option from all the other shops I've been calling around to. We plan on keeping the car for a while, so I just want it done right for some peace of mind. :(

What good is a 3 year 50K warranty if it doesn't cover the drive train?
That warranty sounds like a waste of money. For 300 to 400 and you do the labor, you can replace the tranny 4 times for what the dealer wants. Do you like paying $85.00 or more and hour for a mechanic? I'd go used....

And I'm keeping my 04 Tacoma 4 x 4 doublecab....

Same here man, same here. 10 baby steps forward and 1 giant one back. Just can't win. It can always always be worse. Trust me - there is always someone else worse off than you if you can believe it.

It covers the transmission and their work. I'm not paying extra for a warranty. Their work comes with the warranty. I could replace it with a used unknown condition tranny and have the same issue happen again. I'd rather have this rebuilt right and know there are new parts in it and it will last. From the research i've done, this year civic seems to have these issues quite often. So just throwing in another used tranny and have it happen again is not something I want to deal with.

And i'm glad you are keeping your truck....?

Thats the wisest most money conscious route. Ive worked in the car industry for 8 years, you know how many times I put junk yard parts, and used parts in vehicles only for them to fail a week later and tell the customer sorry, you went used guaranteeing, then have to sell them the new because they dont want to piss their money away. Buying a tranny at the junk yard is about as money conscious as rolling down the window of your cage at 65 with hundreds in your hand out the window. As for the getting ahead part, I hear it weekly from the wife, she buys alot of stuff and does alot of things to keep her self materially happy, and I always feel that Im letting her down because any time we have something good going and alot of money set aside something comes up and puts us right back to square one..Like loosing a job. I feel your pain man!

If you want my advice, tell the manager that youd agree to do the job if they give you 10% off the final bill. Its simple and easy and they will do it to get the job, we did it on a daily basis as some work is better than none, and everything is 20% markup if the shop does the work, if you buy parts your self it can be anywhere from 10%-400% markup. They dont mark the parts up for the shop more than 20% which allows a 10% discount, and 10% profit on parts. Parts and service split every job, service believe it or not when they do the work gets 40% of what parts are on the job order. JSP If you have ANY questions PM me, Ill let you know the right things to say in order to save money and still get the high quality dealership work done!

THERE IS A REASON techs work for a dealership versus the small shops....because they have skills that surpass that of most small shops, they have the right tools and equipment, and they have the education and training. Who would you want working on your vehicle....the guy whos going off a general service manual, or the guy who went to school specific to that brand? Do you want to spend 2 hours having the small guy diagnose a problem he has no idea how to fix? I had so many phone calls from the shops around town asking to speak with our techs because they dont know whats wrong, tried fixing whats wrong and screwed up, or have it all taken apart and dont know what to do.

Thanks. Yes I did get them to take 10% off, so that is where I am at now. Also, Spunky I just checked the local yards and they have one tranny for my car. 160k miles on it. But it "looks" good they say. Sorry, but NOT going that route. Going online for used ones is about $600-$1200. Gets maybe a 6 month warranty. Then add shipping as well. Same boat. This is the best decision for the situation. And 3 years 50k mile peace of mind. AND i am getting a new clutch as well in that price.

There might be a Honda recall for this defect. Have you looked into that yet?
I work for Honda, maybe I can check into it for you if I had the details.
If you can get it free, that would be superb.

I called Honda direct and spoke with them about that at corporate. No recalls for it related to the issue they said. I asked if there was any type of "goodwill" they could extend to me and help with the cost as well. Denied. This is our 7th Honda... All have been great except this one and my 01 Prelude. (bad year for Honda?). My Prelude had the timing tensioner go out, right outside of warranty. They did do goodwill for me on that and I only had to pay for parts (tensioner, water pump and some other stuff).

I dont have the VIN with me, but it is an 01 5-speed DX coupe Civic, 105,000 miles.

I used to reduce my labor rate to $60 an hour to help my customers out. From 96.87 am hour

Last year the rear backing plates on my 93 v6 Camry (4 wheel disk) rusted to the point that they fell apart,,, literally. No one makes aftermarket rear backing plates,,only Toyota at over $400.00 each, and I needed 2. I bought them,I had to,, none in junk yards, none aftermarket.
