Back when I was in high school I took a photo class. Now this was 16 years ago. Before there really were digital SLR's out there. We used film cameras, developed the film in our dark room, then printed the images in the dark room, pretty much all black and white. It was a lot of work but really made me appreciate the art of photography. My parents bought me one of the original Canon EOS Rebels that year for graduation that year. I did some photo stuff for a few years after that and then the cost of film and developing it outside of school just got more than I was willing to deal with. So I have been out of photography for more than 13 years.
Well for Christmas my awesome wife surprised me by buying me a Canon EOS T3. Not the highest end of DSLR's, but it's one hell of a lot better than the little point and shoot digital cameras I've always had. So yesterday and today I've been playing around with it trying to remember some of the skills and such that I had at one time. Took a lot of basic stuff at our Christmas gatherings yesterday and today I went out with some of my family off roading and took the camera. Not the best shots yet, but I've got a lot of studying and practicing to get to the level of some of you guys on here.

Nice shots! I just upgraded from a Canon XS to a T3i. There's really not much difference, except a few features. All the Rebels take great pictures. The T3 should keep you very happy.
What mode do you shoot in? If you don't already, try experimenting with Aperture priority mode, and keep the aperture as wide as you can. It gives you shallower depth and is nice for everything except landscapes. It will even make your jeep look better! With faster lenses, the shallow depth isolation thing will be even more pronounced. Shallow depth is one of the main advantages of using a DSLR, along with less noise.

Thanks. I was using the aperture priority mode mainly with any of the closer stuff. Most of the stuff of the cars was more of a jump out and take a quick picture or aim through the windows when I could so I had it on full auto just to be quick (BTW - If my uncle and cousin heard you call their FJ Cruisers Jeeps, they'd have to kick your ass lol )
Last night I realized the Canon 35-80mm and Quantaray 70-210mm lenses I had for my old Rebel work on this camera so I'm planning on doing some more depth of field stuff with those lenses. The lens that comes with it is only 18-55mm. I used to really like using zoom and aperture size to really isolate the subject. I also have a ton of filters I used to use with the old film camera that I want to start using again.
I've got a weeks vacation coming up next week so I'll be using the camera a lot and playing around.
These are a couple of other night shots I thought came out kind of cool.

Spent the morning @ Balboa Park with my wife and took a lot of pics. Some from inside the SDMFA (San Diego Museum of Fine Art) and a lot form the botanical gardens. I love photographing flowers and plants. You can really get a lot of color and contrast in them.
This is the raw photo and the one below is after I played with it on iPhoto (don't have Photoshop) The architecture around Balboa Park just looks awesome in black and white, antiqued, and sepia tones.

Anyone know of a good camera backpack? One that can hold a DSLR body, 15-55mm, 35-70mm, and a 70-200mm lenses as well as various filters, cleaning stiff, spare battery, memory cards, etc... I've looked around online and the only ones I can seem to find that look big enough are $200. But I don't really know all the good online stores to buy camera stuff yet so if you guys have links to good online shops to I'd appreciate it. I have a bag that actually came as a package deal with my camera but it's packed full and it's a standard bag with a shoulder harness. A backpack will be a lot better for heading out and keeping all the stuff I'll need.

Thanks. I thought about heading out and taking pics. But that would mean I wasn't riding. lol. That's actually part of why I wanted the back pack. So I can ride out with friends and pull off to the side and take pics of them.

I love it. The majority of my camera lenses and equipment have come from B&H
Went to the San Diego Wild Animal Park today. It's part of the San Diego Zoo and the most successful breeding and conservation park in the world. (My wife and I are members of the San Diego Zoological Society and have annual passes for the Animal Park and the Zoo.) They have a 900 acre "open space" enclosure for many of their endangered animals that replicates some of their natural habitat. Allows for some pretty decent photo ops when you're on the tour. I want to do their "Photo Safari" where they take you actually into the enclosures in the back of a truck and get some really good photo ops. But I think these came out nicely. All were taken with my Quantaray 70-210mm telephoto lens. I need to get a UV filter for this lens bad. Many of the shots came out overexposed and with some glare. But I did get a few nuggets.
This is one of two Southern White Rhino's the Wild Animal Park has. They're two of the only 6 left in the word. The other 4 are at another breeding facility in Europe. They haven't been able to get them to breed in 10 years. I've heard rumors that if the breeding program doesn't produce any offspring in the next 5 years, they're going to resort cloning, or this species will be gone forever.

Meerkats just seem to love to pose for the camera. lol

My brother in laws are big into this game called Dystopian Wars. They custom paint all their own pieces. They're pretty elaborate.
Kind of tough taking pictures through cages at the zoo but you can zoom through in some cases. This wasn't one of them lol
