You may have been doing this with a warm engine, and if so, disregard.
One of the worst things you can do for your bike (or car, or any lubricated motor) is rev the engine while cold.

I've seen the light and have a sedici learher jacket now for street use which I picked up on sale at cycle gear. Excellent jacket and great price and I feel like my skin stands a chance. I also wear Kevlar reinforced jeans.
I have that same tailbag. I need to repair the elastic material as it has started coming apart at the seam. It does expand nicely to hold a lot of stuff and zips down out of the way when empty.

Loooove my metric hex sockets... The are sold at the auto parts chains too. You only need three... Speaking of which I think I'll write up a recommended tool list for our bike.
That's how I do it. I think it could be an issue if you fill up, live a block from the gas station, and the temperature goes up a lot. Even then it will just vent out the overflow onto the ground by the kick stand.
