Rubber shifter gromet (for lack of a better description)
On bikes I've had where it wore out or fell off, I just shifted from then on with the bare lever....no big deal.

if I lead the bike with my shoulders through a turn, the bike just seems to turn itself...I'm not aware of putting any pressure on the bars at all.

The spot where the marks line up is where the mechanism ideally starts to lift the clutch. To get more free play you turn the screw in...you know that, right? The other end of the cable might have come loose...you could check that.

Do one fork at a time and you don't have to worry about them sliding down (up) too far.
