Why have so many people been blasted and had their pictures plastered on this site recently? I'm guessing none of the people from these photos are here to defended themselves from the high and mighty who I guess wear suits of armor when they ride. If it's within the law then people have the right to ride in whatever they want. I just don't see why putting them on blast is so popular on this site.
If that means that riders are more aware of the benefits of wearing protective gear and I see more people concerned about their safety and wearing more and more gear, that makes me happy.
As far as I'm concerned, I adhere to ATGATT.
And there is certainly nothing wrong with that but I adhere to the freedom to wear what you choose to wear, within the law. The problem with people that wear all the gear, is many of them get overconfident and feel it protects more than it actually does. Most of the gear, will only protect you from road rash, not broken bones or death. The helmet may be an exception to death, but is certainly no guarantee to that either.
Now that being said, I do wear all the gear when riding my FZ6R, except overpants, but thats just because I haven't bought them yet. Spent all the money buying the wife ALL the gear first for her bike.
Back to the definition of 'squid'. I don't think it has anything to do with gear, although it has been said that alot of the time, a squid is not wearing all of it. You can still be a squid and be fully geared, and not be a squid while not being fully geared. It has to do with the way you ride.
Just my opinion, YMMV.
I believe that adults should be free to choose for themselves how much protection they need in all aspects of life. That even includes helmets. That being said, you will never find me without my gear, (I have ruined a couple helmets) that is the choice I make. Indian Larry made his choices........ If you don't wish to join him, gear up.

With regards to people riding in jeans... judge with a gentle fist - you never know who might actually have knee-pads on under their jeans.
I'm coming to realize I can't always wear my riding pants, and plan to invest in some knee pads I can wear against my skin like these:

Agreed. I think a squid is someone on a fast sportbike driving like a dumbass. (usually young, brazen, and lacking common sense. Ah I remember those days!) It amuses me to make fun of of funny pictures but I really don't care what others wear. I have heard all of the arguments about people raising insurance rates, giving people with bikes a bad name but honestly it's never going to change so to each their own.
Also, cruisers shouldnt be in this conversation IMO. Not that it is gonna hurt any less if you go down but its a different riding style and culture than sport bikes. I do not wear leather pants with knee pucks when i ride but I wouldn't consider myself a squid or unsafe. Getting on a bike is a risk every time no matter what. Everyone should do what makes them happy and ride safe!

First- The whole point of me putting this thread up was simply to show what kind of crazy things people do in very little gear. Someone else brought up the idea that we should have a thread like this. I just acted on it. That road that most of those pictures come from is no joke. There's a reason hundreds of bikes ride laps up and down that road every weekend. It's twisty, tight, a lot of fun, but can be very dangerous. I would never even attempt that road on my bike without full gear on.
Second- The reason I used the term squid is because 90% of the time, at least around here, when you see someone exhibiting squidly behavior, the most their wearing is a helmet (because it's illegal not to) and a jacket and the vast majority of the time they're the one's who end up hitting the asphalt. The fact that I've seen many of these guys out there in jeans and skate shoes hanging off, doing 70mph around corners with their unprotected knee 3" off the ground makes them squids in my book. Yes I've seen squids in full gear doing some dumb ass things. They're just as much squids in my book. If I ran across a picture of a guy in full leathers doing a wheelie past the photographer, I'd post them up as a squid as well. I already posted a picture of three guys in full leathers on Palomar riding 2 wide in one lane and a third in the opposite lane! If that's not squidly behavior, I don't know what is. Maybe I should stop using the word squid and use the word I really think of describes them. CRAZY!
Third- The smart ass comment about me getting a new pair of pants and now everyone else is a squid, that's just not true. Before I got my leathers, I was fully armored under the jeans I was wearing. I haven't ridden in jeans without armor underneath since I saw pictures 6 months ago of how "well" the kevlar lined jeans really protect from road rash. I've been of the opinion that anyone not in full gear is crazy for quite some time. I was crazy myself for a while and I'm just lucky in those first few months of riding I never had to deal with hitting the ground in jeans.
I'm a firm believer in wearing as much gear as you can. Believe me, I understand not having full gear for monetary reasons. It's expensive. That's why it took me so long to get it and why I bought last years model on sale. But that's also why I went ahead and spent the $130 on the A* armored shorts and 661 knee/shin guards so I could still be protected under the jeans I had. But not wearing gear because it's too hot out or you think it looks cool is just crazy. Like I said before, I'd rather sweat than bleed. Those of you who've spent that $1000 on a exhaust for this bike, you could get a two piece suit, proper boots, good gloves, and a decent helmet for that money.
Yes you have the right to wear whatever you want within the limits of the law. I also have the right to my opinion that you're crazy for not being prepared for that freak accident that's going to leave you in the ER scrubbing asphalt out of your road rash.
If the moderators feel this thread is too offensive to those who are crazy enough to not wear gear, by all means, close it. If not, I'll continue to find pictures of these guys and girls and post them up.

BTW, if you are adult enough to decide what to wear (or not to wear) then you are adult enough to take criticism about your lack of gear. Or at least you are adult enough to respect another person's opinion and right to express it.
You are correct and I will no longer post up anything where the only thing I see wrong is someone wearing jeans. Look at most of my pictures. You'll see me in jeans. What you don't see is the armor underneath and I should take into account that others may have been doing the same thing.

People seem to forget that a motorcycle is almost the last bastion of personal freedom. It's a solitary feeling that I love.
I don't take to heart what any religion says, and there are plenty of people that take ATGATT to a religious level. If that's your personal belief, so be it, but I don't like being preached to. Wearing a full leather suit and a $$$$ helmet doesn't make you better than me nor does it give you the right to look down your nose at anyone. I do what I want when I want, all within the law..... and that's ALL that should matter.
I'm an adult, and I'm fully aware of the danger of operating a vehicle that offers no kind of protection. If I choose (and occassionally I do) to not wear a helmet, so what. It's not against the law in my state, and if something bad were to happen it's not going to hurt anyone else but me.... and don't give me the "all the people that love you" speech. I'm talking physical injury here. I can understand if you have kids, it's harder... but then again just mounting up is a risk, so you've already made a personal decision and came to your own conclusions of responsiblity about that.
I wear a helmet 95% of the time.... gloves, earpulgs and glasses everytime. I shake my head at people that don't at least do that, but I'll be damned if anyone catches me wagging my finger at them... which is exactly what this thread is doing.
I'm just another person on the planet... like the rest of you, not omnipotent... so my opinion matters to only one person: me. And anyone else's opinion of me matters not.
That being said, I'll leave you with this: Ride smart, ride safe... most importantly enjoy yourself!

James- I wouldn't really consider you a squid because I know you're riding well within your limits having ridden with you. I do think you're crazy for not protecting your lower body as well as you do your upper body. I think you need to get yourself some overpants with armor or some armor for under your jeans. Especially if you're going to be riding roads like 94. And a decent pair of boots really is a must IMO. Again, just my opinion. And believe me when I say I'm only saying all of this with your best interest at heart. I don't want to see people injured. And where there's a simple way to HELP protect against possible injury, I just don't see why there's such resistance to it.although ive participated in this thread... (when i see an opportunity for a tasteless joke, i take it... its what i do...), i agree with you. i think it is important to remind everyone of the benefits of the proper gear, but i think the majority of riders can identify with some of these pics...

It drives me crazy to ride with my dad. He's a Harley guy and wears t-shirts and jeans with Nike's all the time. I give him so much crap about it you wouldn't believe. For some reason he's not understanding that I've got his best interest at heart and don't want to see him hurt. But I'll never change his mind and he'll never change mine.
Totally agree on the whole entertainment value thing. There is this epic thread full of squid pics on this kawi forum I was checking out that was hilarious. It had more of a "we are hear to laugh" tone though. That's what I am hear to do - laugh.

I'm also not a religious person. And I despise being preached to. However, I would never deny anyone who is religious their right to start a thread in "The Bar" section of this open forum to discuss their views and beliefs about religion. I simply wouldn't go into their thread. They have the right to their opinions and beliefs. If they think they're better than me because they believe in a God that I don't, fine. That's their opinion and they're welcome to it. I know what I believe in (or don't believe in) and as you said, that's all you need. I don't need to discuss that aspect of life with them and we'll all get along. If you don't like what's discussed or posted in this thread, don't come in and read it. Simple as that.
That being said, back to the topic.
Check this out. Jeans (doesn't look like anything under them) and tennis shoes with that much of a lean angle on that road. If his knee touches he's going to be in some serious pain.
