If you want to play with high dof shots, spend $100 and get the fixed 50mm f1.8 lens... best you can do with kit lenses is around f4.5... and thats on the lowest zoom... just search for cannon 50mm 1.8 and look at the sample images... been a favorite for portrait shots, but will do exactly what you want for making any object stand out.
And yes... its the digital age... read up on the photo triangle a bit, then go play with the settings and see how they all work. Also a good idea to use spot or partial metering so your light level meter is based off your subject more than the surrounding scene, same with focus setting... use the center dot or your digital camera is going to try and get everything in focus.
