A lot of you have switched to naked bikes (or still have both). Please share your impressions regarding wind protection, especially longer distance rides. Thank you!

Yea that one thing that I regret not having. I'm in the middle of making a windscreen with the oem windshield that I still have. Once I make it ill post pics and hopefully it'll be better on the highway.

I prefer the naked. On the FZ6R I cut the windscreen down (the one generously from you :)). Then on the FZ8 it was the same type of feel. There is no buffeting. You get more air, but it is clean non-directed air. Windscreens tunnel it right to your head or chest.

It seems either no/a small windscreen or a massively large one is the way to go. Anything in-between just seems worse.

I have a touring screen on my bandit and I hate it. Funnels the air right to my head. Anytime I stand up, the buffeting goes away and it is smooth clean air.

The FZ8 was great. Going over 80mph you do really start to feel the wind, but its not bad. High speed runs you can still duck down and make yourself more aerodynamic.

I plan on getting a stock screen for the bandit and cutting it down eventually.

So I like the naked/chopped down better. I'm sure a massive screen would be great but I do not like that look at all on a sporty bike.

I feel the same way about the stock FZ6R windscreen. I need to cut mine or get something bigger to eliminate the buffeting. The wind hits me in the shoulders/head. My previous motorcycles had no windscreen and I did not know what wind buffeting felt like until I got the 6R. The buffeting is tolerable for me if I sit up tall but if I relax and slouch just a little the buffeting is bad.

I am not sure if the fairings are functional or purely cosmetic.

I make JSP my words, the buffering of the wind right to your head is no good. Nothing like feeling a full breeze through your body when riding. I have no regrets in changing to a naked bike.

You just got make sure to get some warm gear for the cold days. You feel the cold air cutting you like a knife.

Wind resistance, just got make sure you don't grip with butter fingers and you will be alright.

So to all those that chopped their windshields, how do you go about doing it cleanly. Seen a few on here and like the look and would love to get rid of the buffeting.

Here is what mine looked like when I did it.

Cant remember exactly but I started with a hack saw then finished with a dremel. Cut a hair above your line then TONS of sanding. Came out with a perfect frosted edge. Very happy with how it turned out.

Tape it up good so you do not scratch the surrounding areas. Never got around to painting it black. Would have looked even better..

This is what I did.
Stock screen big difference than naked.
Wind seems to go over my head. It's also pointed upright more than stock position. Plus I also like the look.

I used a jigsaw and it turned out great. No need for sanding if you are precise with the jigsaw.

I put some wide masking tape on the screen to protect it and to be able to draw a guiding line. Carefully drew a line with a sharpie where I wanted to cut. Went medium slow with jigsaw.
