Squid decided to ruin our ride last night...

I would fight it myself a ticket for 5 MPH over is pretty chicken SH#@ ticket to write in my opinion I would go tell the judge what happened and you might skirt out of it without having to pay anything. Most Judges dont like to see tickets wrote for 5 MPH , they pretty much have the same thought that its a crap ticket.....and heres another thing ...when was the last time the cops speedo was calibrated? all things that are asked in court by defense attorneys....

theres always one in the crowd and Like you already stated you will just have be more picky on who rides and who doesnt.....set the ground rules right out of the gate and if they dont like it tell them to kick rocks...

5 over? there has got to be a way you can argue that. Maybe throw in how bike's speedo's are off by a percentage so you were trying to ride with traffic speed because it is safer that way? I dunno man but I drive about 7 over everywhere I go and have never gotten a ticket unless i was going 12 or more over.

i hear about this sorta thing happening a lot, unfortunately... cops sometimes react too slow, and ppl get nailed for the driving/ riding behavior of someone else on the road simply due to mistaken identity... cops are ppl too, and they make mistakes. sometimes they write these kinda tickets just to save face after realizing they probably messed up..

i dunno if u can really make the squid pay for everyone's tickets. yes- he caused the problem. but, u guys did, after all, allow him to ride along with you when u very well could've pulled off the road or separated yourselves... and, even by ur own admission u were riding faster than the speed limit. it's really just a combination of bad luck...

try to fight the ticket by written declaration, if that's allowed in your state. or, go to court and fight it.

It's not a democracy, it's about the safety of the other riders in the group. F*K up on a second ride, and you are banned from future rides.

If everyone who was issued a traffic ticket fought it in court, they'd have to stop issuing so many because the courts would grind to a halt. I always contest mine even if I'm caught dead to rights. You never know what may happen in court. At worst, you'll waste a couple hours of your time and still have to pay the fine. At best, the cop won't show, or you may sway the judge (helps if you are prepared) into reducing or dismissing your fine.

depending on what that ticket might do to your insurance... within a week, you'll start to get a few letters in the mail from lawyers (nice how they get your info eh?) that fight traffic violations, it might be worth it to pay them a hundred or so, heck they could probably get that BS 5 over ticket dropped to a lesser non moving violation for no license points. good luck

Not all Police are like this. I bet that Cop was pissed off at the Squid big time and went overboard on the group. His actions don't speak for all the LEOs out there.

Exactly the reason I stopped riding with and organizing rides with the group I was part of on meetup.com. I met some very good friends on that site and some excellent riders and had some epic rides with them. But the last 3 rides I went on with them had some sort of major incident (including one death on a ride the same day with a different group of guys) involving an unknown rider doing things they shouldn't be to try and show off for the new group of guys he's trying to impress. I used to have limits to the number of people I would allow to sign up for my rides and every time people showed up to the meeting spot who weren't in on the ride. Usually people I didn't know and didn't trust. I was sick of being the ass hole who had to tell people they're not welcome on our ride.

Last ride I went on was a welcome back ride for a friend who had just got home from Afghanistan. This was an RSVP only meetup with a limit that required full gear since we were all intermediate level or higher riders and would be a spirited pace through some fairly technical mountain roads. Just as we're leaving, some dude rolls up on a 'Busa that's been lowered, stretched swingarm, spinners, 240mm rear tire, spikes all over it instead of fairing bolts, airbrushed with a dumb ass Batman theme, in jeans, a wife beater, and baseball batting gloves. :banghead: He joined in while we were rolling out so we couldn't really kick him out at that point. And somehow ended up right in front of me. As I'm riding behind this guy who's got music playing in his helmet and is literally dancing and bobbing around on his bike while we're riding, :tard: I just knew something was going to go down. When we hit the twisties, in the first tight turn the dumb ass ended up blowing out the plug he put in his 240mm rear tire on the way to the meetup that morning, which is what caused him to be late. Luckily I was smart enough to ride far enough back that I just saw him blow it and go off the road in the first 25mph corner trying to take it at the speed everyone else was. (We found out about the plug etc... when the sweep stopped to help him out.) Our sweep rider got on the radio and told us to go on, she'd wait for a tow truck with him. When she caught up to us later, she said she asked him how he found out about the ride. He said he saw it on the meetup site and just figured it was a welcome home for a fellow Marine and he figured we'd be honored to have another Marine there. :eyebrow: When the guy who we were doing the ride for heard that he was so pissed. "Douche Bags like that give Marines who ride the bad name that we have" were his words. :rant:

So far, the only ride I've gone on where I didn't know the people before hand was with two guys from here. It was a good ride, fortunately. And I look forward to riding with them again. Which reminds me, I still need to pull out my camera and download that sucker to post up the picks from the last ride.

As with all activities, groups always have the potential to get hairy. I've known group fly-ins go horribly awry. I watched a raft full of friends get sucked under water because they thought that particular spot looked more fun than the channel I had our raft take — luckly no one drowned, but it seemed like an eternity before the first of them surfaced, and most of them were beat bloody by the "sticky hole". I've known people, my dad included, maimed by hunting buddies that didn't respect firearm safety. With all of it, you learn lessons — and that lesson isn't necessarily to stop riding with others, but who you trust riding with.

I think I'd have been firm with the guy. I've lived my life thus far without seeing someone die in front of me, and — while I know it may happen someday — I just don't want it to be some idiot.

He actually said that? That dumbass was probably an admin clerk too when he was in. That mentality chaps my ass. Be very proud of what you did but don't go through life expecting everyone you meet to line up and kiss your ass for it. If that's why you joined, you served for the wrong damn reason.

did the guy with the bluetooth complete the call to report the squid? If he did, that should be enough for the judge to dismiss. If he didn't complete the call, a copy of the first post of this thread should be enough for a judge to make the right decision.
