The last report I read had the Avenger swerving onto the right sandy shoulder and he over corrected to the left, launching him into the bikes.

Yes but if the avenger would have a head on collision with the civic then I imagine everyone would still be alive, there is a higher chance since their in a "cage" with the airbag systems etc.

if there were 12 motorcycles in a caravan and the civic crossed DY from behind, if it's a straight road, wouldn't avenger have see it from the distance? maybe he wasn't paying attention? there are some details that are not too clear...

That said, sometimes bikers do the same thing... Just last week two Harleys made dangerous passes crossing DY on blind turns cuz they were too impatient to wait. Yes there was a mini-van and some cars going kinda slow down the mountain and slowing traffic for everyone. Yes it sucks... But you know what, that's life... Another cruiser and I were stuck behind them too and we just sucked it up and rode safely behind the line in formation. Those Harley guys could've caused a major accident, killed themselves, killed or hurt others too...

I agree that some riders do pass on the DY in very dangerous ways. In fact yesterday, not far from this crash, a Marine died in a crash on a VERY tight twisty road called Wynola road (very well known for being narrow, tight, and very dangerous) when he tried to pass two other bikes across the DY and hit a 4th bike head on. Dumb move on his part. Luckily the guy he hit is only injured. But still a major dumb move and he paid the ultimate price.

However, I can't imagine any rider trying to pass 12 bikes all at once on a DY with a car coming on the other side.

It was more like 24 riders... the avenger swerved, then came back into the middle of the pack, the story I linked up said the lead riders thought the avenger was going to hit them , he was basically out of control when he passed them, on the shoulder, then came back into the middle of the pack, they also said it was the civic that set it all off. I'm sure the avenger having alcohol in his system made his reflexes a little slow as well and also why he is in custody.
Lot's of what ifs in this case.

No alcohol involved for the driver of the avenger, they are laying 100% of the blame on the civic driver.

And there are those people here that wonder why police officers can be so jaded, why they just don't "give me a break" and "why they picking on me"...It's because they deal with this type of stuff day in and day out...face to face. Having to tell the families they lost a loved one due to an errent driver. Every single time they drive down that road now, they are going to see that horrilbe collision scene, see those people that lost their lives in a tragic, pointless collision. And, you want them to be nice and give you a break when your driving like a fool? I'd be out there the next day hammering the crap out of that road not giving one break, so that, in hopes I wouldn't have to see another innocent person lose their life. It's hard to live with that burden.

Ranting done...Food for thought.

Ride safe out there and be vigilant and have an excape route.

The last I read, they were talking with the Mexican government so as to look at footage at border crossings to see if the person fled to Mexico. Anyone heard anymore about that?

Yeah there is a shoulder for a reason. Can't believe someone would swerve further into more traffic. Ridiculous.
