Only illegal if you have them on while riding. You have a separate switch available that you can flip while riding to shut them off if you have to?

well see state law says any forward facing , blue , red , amber light (constantly running for amber) and any rear facing white light .....but its up to interpitation and who the Trooper is and Judge is that day in court....me personally as long as its not blue or red im not messing with it green / purple and so on i dont really hassle but Im also not a Trooper

Actually its illegal regardless of if they are on or not....in California, at least. If its illegal to have them when they're turned on, then its illegal to have mounted at all. BUT, if you DO have a switch for it AND your not stupid enough to drive around with them on, then the cops will never know you have them installed in the first place....
