Chain replacement

So what chain size did you use when you replaced yours?

The books I have seen call for a 525 which seems semi uncommon.

the 530's and 520's seem to be the most common.

Or was it something else?

stock is 520... just look at one of the links... it's stamped on it

there is a thread with the number of links as well, think it was 118 or 120...

You cannot switch to a different size chain unless you switch to that size sprocket as well. 530 is a big chain. My bandit uses that. They are freaking expensive too.

Most bikes go down to a 520 conversion sprockets and chains for less weight (rotational mass) savings.

FZ6R already has a 520 chain. Stick with that.

No reason to ditch the 520 chain. That's what you want because of the weight savings. My 675 for some stupid reason came with a 525 chain. Ditched it over the winter.

A couple of weeks ago CC mentioned a 520 thats supposed to be made of spinach.I'm sure he will mention it later.

I just picked up an EK 520-120link chain that is PINK of course! Heck ya! I have to wait for my countershaft sprocket to come off of backorder before I can put this thing on though. Sad day for that.

520 is the size you want like others have said. EK, DID, both are good brands. And stock length is 118 links. Best if you change the sprockets wih your chain too. I was able to get 2 chains out of a set of Driven lightened sprockets though.

What is the difference between EK and DID? Is it really just a brand?

I personally think EK is a little better of a brand. I thought about going RK, but they didn't have colored chains. DID is what came stock on our bike. I went with an X-ring this round cause I've heard the X-rings last a bit longer than the regular O-Ring chains.

Both RK and DID are made in Japan.

I went DID VX 520, gold plates with a black plate rivet link. DO NOT USE A MASTER LINK. Go for the rivet link.

They have a lifetime warrenty as well. That's hard to beat. A little pricey, but if you never have to buy another one and you plan on keeping your bike for a long time, what have you got to lose?

Am I wrong on this? But this does not seem like really that expensive compared to X Ring chains!

I just haven't heard of these chains before.

As the chain goes to work, it heats up . In less than a minute the temperature of the chain reaches a
point that triggers the release of the slippery synthetics embedded in the o-rings.
The smart rings become wet, the sideplates are lubricated , lowering the friction N.Z.D. (near zero drag).

So they purposely let the lube out from behind the o-rings? That seems bad no? How much lube can there be to keep letting out? Seems it would go dry.

I would stick with known good quality brands. Never heard of them. But would be interested to see someone try and review.

I am thinking of doing the group buy going on.

If we go +1 in the front,or whatever # you do in combination front rear, is it still always going to be 118 link? There will never be a need to go up to 120 or something? So with the group buy we will need to cut out 2 links correct?

I bought a 120 from MSS as they were on sale and cheaper than a 118.
I just cut out an inner and outer link. ( 2 links )

Ok. You lost me. "The working load sets a lower limit on pitch..." I don't get it. Seems like the size of the smaller sprocket would set the minimum pitch, not the load.

It's a chain on a sprocket. I don't see how the load on either end would determine the distance between links. Rather it seems that the spacing and size of the teeth and diameter of the sprockets would determine that.

If it were only the load, heck every chain would have itty-bitty links. Problem is, they wouldn't mesh with the sprockets.

What am I missing, here?

More questions to follow, concerning this post. But perhaps an answer to my first couple will lead me to my own answers.

I am no expert....

But when you put the pulling force on the chain with the front sprocket I would think the the chain will deflect some of the force by "bending" slightly...maybe?

think of a flat bed semi trailer or bridge they have a curve to them and when force is applied to them they flatten out.
