So, some of you already know, I had a run-in with a deer at highway speeds.
The accident:
Typical, late night at work, clear skies, but dark. Was heading home, just passed a bunch of exit barriers, so moved far left of a three lane highway to allow merging cars room, then , I saw her... Just at the top of a small hill that divides the highway, jumped down to the edge of the road, I slowed, looked where to go if she jumped in front of me, but my options were limited, if I went right, she'd just hit me from the side, could be bad, could get pinned under the bike in the middle of the road! Looked left where she was, it was a ditch and a hill, good chance of flipping the bike, going over to the oncoming traffic, not good either... so, when you make that split second decision to hit the deer... it sucks!
I remember hitting her right behind her front legs, then her back end came around and knocked me off the bike, couldn't have happened better than it did, considering... I slid for a good bit, but was on my boots, butt and arms mostly, helmet never hit the ground. When I came to a stop, I thought, $%$%%@ my bike!, then, I need a sec... nope, turned around and saw cars coming, tried to stand up, to get out of the road, but it wasn't happening, my arm was beat, crawled out of the road with my good arm and legs.
Had quiet a few cars stop who saw the whole thing, nice of them... I immediately got my gloves and helmet off, pita with one arm, then called 911... said, yeah, I need and ambulance, I just hit a deer, on my motorcycle! Lady said she was on the phone with several other callers that were looking for me, sure enough, my bike went to the right, I was in the median, so I held my phone up and called out to them.
I'm halfway through my 3 week "vacation", go back to see bone doc a week from Friday. I will say, gear saved me a lot of pain, broken arm? well, you try hitting a 200lb doe at 40-50mph and see if something doesn't break. lol. My gloves did allow some rash, I figured my fingers initially rolled under while I was sliding, but, just shaved a bit of my fingernail off, nothing else.
pics coming.
fyi, my gear:
Cortech VRX Air Jacket, with updated ce back protector (one that came with jacket was just foam)
Tourmaster Venture Air pants
Tourmaster Solution WP Air boots
BMG Rapido gloves
Shoei RF1000 helmet
