If you've seen any of my threads or videos, you know I'm pretty capable. I've painted a few bikes and done almost anything you can think of to a car or bike short of rebuilding an engine or trans (well, rebuilt scooter trans).

I had wanted to plastidip my bike, but after seeing BF12FZ6R dip his, said I'm going for it! Took a few days and took my time to break everything down, clean the parts, air dry 24 hours, etc. I've painted plasti lots of times from spray cans, but first time with the electric paint sprayer.

ROUND 1 goes to Plastidip...... :wtfgun:

Good news is I think I figured it out. Trying to paint my wife's helmet with white I couldn't get full coverage even after over a dozen heavy coats. Same thing here. The tank graphics are still visible even after MANY coats of orange. Then this morning the pieces are looking more brown in person than the photos and video show. Brown!? Maybe more burnt orange/bronze??? Some people say use a white base coat for brighter color, but that's even more dip to buy. Soon I will have been able to pay someone for a REAL paintjob.

Solution: Dip everything in black FIRST so no graphics show through. Fire up the sprayer and go to it. Oh, and I did decide to hit the front cowl with some silver metallizer for flake. Hot d@mn!

for the cost of the material and amount of work I dont know that its worth it considering you will get a slightly lighter tone...

I think your front cowl with the metalizer looks awesome!! what you may want to try is hit it with a layer of glossifier!!! that should give it that bright touch you are looking for

In person you can tell it isn't perfect and I'm a perfectionist, so I think I'm gonna respray anyway. Also, it's REALLY brown in person now, the pictures don't tell the full story. I have a few cans of white and a couple cans of black, so I'm gonna redo a piece or two. If it comes out well, order another gallon of orange.

The silver metalizer goes a long way, that was a small spritz. I bought one spray can of it. If I did a glossifier, I would want a gallon, and that's another $65-80 plus shipping :|
 
Dude, I'll trade you tanks, I'll even pay for shipping both ways. I have a Raven with an all black tank so there are no graphics to hide! My tank is MINT I just like the graphics on the newer tank. I'll even trade you the fairings too, they are just as mint as the tank.

I appreciate it, but I'm pretty sure in a year or two I'll be going back to stock.
 
I agree. I think it looks pretty good. Especially the front with the metalizer in it!

Looks good man. I think you a good job on it.Smart how you're not going to paint the gas tank because I heard the gas will ruin plastidip.
 
I think you did a pretty good job, however I don't like the dark color it dried into. Fairing looks nice and even coats, where the tank needs at least 2 more coats to even it out and cover the black (I think). The extra coats might bring the color out more too.. but I think the base white coat would be wonders for it.

Also on the cowl, the flake looks great, but not on the black piece above the jewel light.. just looks like overspray hit it now.

I don't remember the price but this dip stuff isn't much cheaper than getting it painted right. So if it needing that many coats it's saving might just be nullified.
Not sure of your area, but bringing the plastics into a spray shop in my area $300 get you 1 base color and $500 for upto 3 colors (anything too fancy gets pricey fast though). I believe they said it was 3 coats minimum of paint and 3 coats clear, they won't replace decals.
Just curious if for those prices you would paint over dip?

Honestly paint would probably be cheaper but I love that this is reversible, that's the kicker.

That tank has no less than 12 coats on it... a few more won't make it too much better
 
You sprayed it on too heavy the first coat. That is why it looks like that...
 
also, to reach a % transparency I sure hope you didn't just buy plasti & then add thinner:eek:


While people call it plasti-dip, it should be noted that "plasti-dip/rubber-dip" is what is needed as it already contains the proper amount of dilution..
 
If that's 12 coats on the tank, more will not help. Reversible when you want is great. My thoughts are; while moving, what if a rock/road debris take a chunk out and then the air forced past it starts to tear it off for ya?!!

I'd paint the bike, dip the rims if you have to dip something (easier to fix).
 
Ok, I've calmed down & watched your video several times....


It should have reached coverage after at the most 5 coats IMO, going over black can be tricky, but 12 coats? WTF!

Did my homework and more than triple checked, its the ready to spray no-thinner-needed dip.

I'm trying out a new color but ultimately probably want to go back to stock at some point

WTH indeed. As great as everyone says plastidip is, I've always had fair results. This coverage thing pisses me off though.
