Just got scammed on Craig's List

This is the oldest trcik in the book and it sucks that you fell for it. I'm not sure if you're ever going to use craigslist again, but next time meet in a very public place like starbucks. hopefully one with cameras. Open and play with the merchandise on the spot. I'm going to pretend if I don't see it it doesn't exist so I have to see it before I hand over cash. Other than that I don't know what else you can really do. At the very least you might have phone calls or text messages to help prove your case, I hope you printed the craigslist ad...

If it's any consolation, that looks like a pretty interesting book.

I hate to say it, but I even posted a link to a news article about a woman buying an iPad that turned out to be a wooden plank a couple weeks ago...

Sucks that everything happened, but inspect all items before the purchase is made. Especially at a non-retail location. Even at retail locations you can find defects before you take it home. Don't even get me started on grocery stores selling expired food.

update:
Called PG county police department to file a report, police officer called me back about 15mins later and the conversation lasted only about a minute. I told her the story. She basically told me it's my loss and she will not be filing a police report. There was not traceable payment methods used. It's CL, all most everyone pay in cash and meet in person. I guess they'll dismiss all frauds unless you pay with a credit card or check. I'm getting a little frustrated with this.

I would call her back and see if she'd be interested in working with you on a sting operation like stated above. You can bet that this guy will do it again, making 400 a pop at least, and won't back off until he's caught. Scour CL for an ad and have a friend email him, or create another anonymous email for this purpose, and set the same deal up. Ask the cop if they can participate in observing the transaction with you in the car so you can identify if it's the same guy. You do all the legwork since you're good and pissed off wanting to see them pay, and they get to bust a perp. Win-win.

Damn that sucks, losing 400$ must hurt man. Next time pay by paypal too. Even if it is craigslist. Just don't send the money as a gift, send it as a sale and your ass is covered and his name is on the line.

I personally love craigslist because I'm usually on the free section scouring for well...free items I can make useful. Ive made about 100-150$ off of it? I've gotten hay for my garden, tools, arts and crafts supplies, plants. I hate how people ruin a good thing. Sometimes it makes me want to just lose all hope on humanity. Do people not realize how powerful we would be as a whole, instead of the millions of fractions of squandering, squabbling, filth that we must look like to aliens. Oh well >_>

There was a scam like thin on the news...a woman bought a block of wood in an ipad box

Sorry to hear the cops weren't more helpful sirnice. I got ripped off in a similar situation and in the end I decided to let it go and the money I lost was not that high a price for the lesson learned. I'm a firm believer that eventually karma will catch up with the mother#$%er. Happens to most of us at some point in our lives... at least it wasn't a big real estate deal or ponzi scheme.

Sorry to hear about this bro. It make me so mad to see all of these complete losers still not working for a dollar but screwing it out of somebody who does. I got burned out of almost $1400.00 about two years ago and never caught the a$$hole. Was out of state deal that i thought was messed up and took every single step i could to make sure. And in the end the bank screwed me by telling me face to face that the check was good after 7 days and boom. On the 8th day after sending money, the check bounced. Needless to say i no longer have a red cent at fifth third bank. Sucks man. I still wish i could find the guy who screwed me.

Sorry to hear about that. At the least, this will be a life lesson. I never trust Craigslist. It looks like a website that was made during the 1990's. Also, no way the Ipad was like that from target unless someone bought it, took the ipad out and resealed it and returned it as new (which is I guess is possible if someone was really desperate. I know gamestop employees can repackage used games as "new" for example) As for the title of the book... damn

I wonder if the Target gift reciept might have any information on it that the authorities can use (perhaps credit card that was used to pay for the ipad). Maybe you can track him down that way. Anyway I'm rooting for ya, I hate to see the good guys get taken advantage of! Maybe the kharma gods will throw a engine rod in his car. P.S. Did you see what he was driving?

Wow...same thing happened to me. I went through every possible step to make sure the transaction was legit, and even had a banker tell me that in 7 days, when the funds post to your account and are no longer "pending" that the transaction was good. On the 8th day the check bounced and I was out 2 grand. The bank would not do ANYTHING for me, since I did not take down the teller's name or get a written statement proving the conversation happened. Needless to say I immediately switched banks and never looked back. I hate scamming A-holes that enjoy taking other's hard earned money!

Ugh. That sucks. I guess lesson learned. I hope you catch the scumbag though somehow.

There is a term "Let the buyer beware". I'm sorry, but I don't understand why anyone would buy something from an individual they don't know anything about, pay cash, and not make sure they're getting what they paid for. I wouldn't buy a used fridge out of someone's garage without making sure it worked properly first. Most individuals don't have a customer serving returns policy.
