Engine running cold

Typically I ride to work if the outside temperature is above 20F. Lately its been around 32F outside when I leave for work. While riding, the bike temperature will never get above 165F unless it sits and idles for a long time say at an intersection. I have a copy of the dealers manual and it says the thermostat is partially open at 160F but not fully open until 185F. Obviously all of the cold air rushing over the radiator fins is cooling the engine but 165F seems a little low. Is this normal operation for cold weather riding?

It's normal. My 6r usually doesn't get above 167 unless it's 50+ on the highway.

Same here. It was mid 80s here today and water temp is around 170-180 on freeway. It's all good!

Yeah that's definitely normal, especially with seeing the rise when you slow down or stop. No worries, meng. :thumbup:

Same here. I've been riding since late February, and a few of the mornings have hovered around 32°F. The engine never really brakes 170 on the freeway (usually sticks around 165 like you say), and it nudges up to 172 or so on the surface streets.

I work second shift, and it was pretty darn chilly on my ride home tonight. Temp at sustained 60mph was 162. You're good.
