Any digital Rebel would probably suit you quite well. Good quality, light weight, and plenty robust enough to take some nice photos. Good luck on your search.
I was just looking at nextag. You can get an XSi body for three, with kit lens for 4. Hell, you can get a T1i body for 400! I paid 1k last year for the T1i with an IS kit lens.

I know, I can't remember exactly what I paid for my 60D, but a year later I could've picked it up for half. The way the CMOS sensors are advancing the camera's value drops like a lead balloon when a new model comes out... :surrender:
Thing is, and my 60D is 6.3MP, but I couldn't tell a difference between it and the 10MP ones comparing raw to raw photos. Maybe if you blew it up to billboard size, but damn...
It's just like riding a motorcycle - it's more the archer than the arrow - I know people that can take better pictures with a point-and-shoot than I can take with a thousand dollar SLR - and I've done pro photog work. No different than putting Rossi on a stock Ninja 250 and me on his GP bike - he's still gonna get around the track faster.
