Had only 75 miles on my rear tire when i found the same thing. I plugged the tire and went 700-800 miles while the dealer got me a replacement. Also, you can get road hazard protection, which I did after that. So you can do it, but it should not be looked at as a permanent fix.
I've got grips you are referring to and I would say that they are no better than the stock grips. Would recommend trying some of the other mentioned items first. They are cheaper and likely better than the Yamaha grips.

The issue you may have is the distance between turn signals. It should be 16" from the centerline of the lamp.
