Sorry about the insurance and oop (out of pocket) costs. Working the lsat 6 yrs in health insurance, contact the hospital and the dr group and see if the have any financial aid.. $25k is a lot of $. Here in MN, if it is a large bill the patient is responsible for, providers will refer patients to either their groups or others that can help lower the costs significantly. I have heard of bills dropping from $10k to 1.5k and so on.

Are you sure the cost of your injuries aren't covered by your Motorcycle policy?? Some states require "Personal Injury Protection" for you and a possible passenger. It sounds like you had the bike "fully insured", I'd double check to see if there is any sub-section in your insurance that may cover part or all of these medical costs. (just my 2 cents)

1 Titanium plate ($3,500), 9 titanium screws ($1,580) plus doctors, hospital expenses, emergency room and whatever else...total about $25,000 out of pocket as I have no health insurance. Luckily, I'm not doing so bad that I can't afford to pay over time (a long time).

What's the deal with no health insurance?

Believe it or not, after calculating the all the years I have gone without insurance...I'm still ahead monetarily. Granted there is some risk involved but I've never been sick a day in my life. Obviously I've had a cold here and there and have only had the flu twice (really). I figure 23 years @ $120 a month is $33,120. I'm about $9,000 ahead so far. Not to mention I get to write a considerable amount off my taxes for this year...and next.

I will be persuing an insurance option in the near future though. I'm not a spring chicken anymore and that accident hurt. It sucks getting old.

If I may add to your statement... If you had purchased your own insurance, there would also have been a deductible and "out of pocket" max, that you would have been required to pay, then there would be some incidental charges not covered by your insurance, then you would have to pay any overages above the "usual and customary" charges paid by your insurance company, then you would pay for going to a hospital or doctor out of your network plan, etc. etc. etc. All of these "little extra charges" would have ran you about $10K, give or take a thousand...

Personally, I buy my own health insurance because I work for a very small company that can't get a group plan. My health insurance premium has sky-rocketed, eventhough I haven't been sick or used the insurance for anything.

I've had to raise my deductible and lower my coverage just to afford any type of coverage. When I called to ask my health insurance company "why"; they told me as components of the new "Affordable Health Care Act" come into law, they have to raise premiums to cover the costs of compliance. There isn't much more I can cut out of my plan. One more increase and I won't be able to afford any health insurance plan.

And yes... It does suck getting old, but its better than the alternative...
