Well I just got home from the hardest thing I've had to do since joining the motorcycle family.
A friend of mine, Robert Becker, was killed on a group ride last Friday. PAUMA VALLEY: Motorcyclist killed in collision identified His funeral was held this afternoon. We had approximately 50 members of our riding group show up there, all on our bikes, to pay our respects to our fallen friend. We all acted as the escorts from the church to the cemetery, blocking off intersections, and escorting the whole family to Robert's final resting place, lead by Michael, Robert's little brother who's also a member of our riding group. It was very touching to have his family come and thank us for doing that and coming to support the family.
Robert and I were just getting to become good friends. We joined the group at about the same time. We pre rode routes together when we had group rides the next day. The last ride I did with Robert was the Tuesday before he passed. A small group of us got together for a twilight ride after work. It couldn't have been a more beautiful ride. He's the one who escorted me home to keep me safe and visible when my tail light blew on that ride and we were riding home in the dark. The last thing he said to me was on the Chatterbox as I turned into my street and he went his way home: "Thanks for the great ride tonight. Stay safe and have a good night. Thanks again." Man I miss him so much already. The picture below is from that ride. Robert is the one on the left with his KTM Super Duke.
Man he loved that bike. He did things on that bike that you'd never think possible on a bike like that. (Similar to our bike as far as riding position etc...)
We are putting together a memorial ride for Robert on the 26th of June. We're expecting well over 100 bikes. We've collected enough money from our group members to get Robert's bike fixed and we're having Michael, his brother, lead the ride on the Duke. If anyone on here from the San Diego area is interested in attending, PM me and I'll get you all the details. We'll be getting stickers made for us to put on our bikes to remember him by.
An accident like this is a reminder of how dangerous, not only what we do on a motorcycle, but just being on the road really is. This was such a freak accident, even if he'd been in a car he would likely not have made it. Please be careful out there, everyone.
