Hello guys. Just wanted to jump in here and make a post to get you all "in the know" about this firmware / off-edge toggle issue.
First, the off-edge toggle is a technical term that we use that describes how the injector pulse is fired by the stock ECU, and how the Power Commander interacts with the stock ECU to give it the feedback that it expects to see. The ECU on the FZ6R is somewhat picky as to what it expects, so we use a special feature to simulate turning the injector off, then back on to add the additional fuel required by the map.
We created an update called the "off-edge toggle disable" to change a "flag" or configuration setting in the PCV's that rolled off the production line with this feature not already disabled. It is NOT a firmware update, even though it is to be applied in the same manner, through the update firmware tool in the Power Commander Control Center software package.
If your unit has a serial number that starts with 100704 or later, then this flag is already set to disabled, and this update is not required.
While we are talking about firmware updates, let me explain one more thing that we see quite often when customers update the firmware in their device. This is specifically encountered during the first ever firmware update with a computer. When a Power Commander is online and communicating with the software, that is what we call MAIN operating mode. In order to write firmware, we have to drop out of MAIN operation and go into BOOTLOADER. This is akin to booting your computer from a CD or floppy, instead of letting Windows boot normally from the hard drive.
When the PCV switches from MAIN to BOOTLOADER for the first time, the computer will see the BOOTLOADER device as a new device, and need to install a USB driver for it. In most cases, this will require a reboot, and the update will stop with the device still in BOOTLOADER. If you click the SHOW DETAILS button in the update screen, you will typically see it stop at this point (error loading file):
Typically a reboot is required. Close the Power Commander Control Center software. At this point, it is necessary to reboot if the computer tells you that it recently installed a driver that requires a reboot to make use of.
Once rebooted, run the software and go through the update again. In most cases, it will get 2/3 of the way through the update process before stopping again, even though it may show UPDATE COMPLETE. Personally, I shut down the software, restart it, and run the update a third time. This is almost always all that is needed to have the firmware file go through without issue.
As mentioned, this is only required the first time you try to update a PCV with a specific computer. One other thing to note is that each USB connection is handled separately...so if you update through one USB port, then attempt to do it again with a different USB port, you may have to go through this whole procedure again.
Hope this clears up the confusion on these updates for the FZ6R.
