I'd walk up to the park (Central), up 5th Avenue, and check out the original FAO Schwarz (very cool toy store). Across the street from there is (or was) the Dakota where Lennon was shot.

The building across the street from FAO Schwartz is the Plaza Hotel. Somewhat similar style to the Dakota but not the same building. Dakota is at 72nd and Central Park West. Not really much to do or see there, except walk into the park. That neighborhood is mostly residential.

Everything else is pretty much on target. Surprised it took anybody this long to mention the Empire State Building. Do that one at night, it's open late at least part of the week. Usually the first place I send people.

I worked in Tower 2 briefly in the late 80s as well. Was on a software development project that involved some GE people who worked out of there and I was kind of assigned to work directly with the vendor about half the time. My actual office was uptown.

Im from NY, therefore I'm not qualified to give any tourist suggestion sites >_< lol

I dont know too many cool or "edgy" places in NYC... almost makes me just go there and explore :/ Midtown is expensive, go downtown for less expensive bars, restaurants, etc.

Dont go north of central park, it all turns to crap after that.
