I have read this thread since it's birth, fighting the urge to vent on one of our toll roads in Colorado, and I have succumbed. We have a "private toll road", meaning that it is owned by a private authority, and is a semi circle around the city of Denver and suburbs. Each toll gate is $2.oo, each exit and on ramp is $1.00. The stretch of roadway is about 30 miles long, with 5 toll plazas, for a total of $10 just going through the toll plazas, not including getting on and off. The tolls go up every 2 years, automatically. If you run the toll, and get a violation, there is a criminal and civil court proceeding, turning a $2 violation into the thousands, if you do not pay it within 30 days.
The Colorado State Patrol is subcontracted to enforce traffic laws on the roadway. Our taxpayer money goes to fund the CSP, and no funds are paid by the toll authority to the CSP. By definition of private property in the State of Colorado, only 5 violations can be written, including DUI, Careless Driving, Hit and Run, Reckless Driving, and No Proof of Insurance. But somehow, the CSP can write any violation in the state statutes, on this roadway. I have spoken to many of the troopers that get pulled to work the tollway, and they all hate it, and disagree with the philosophy. If they complain about the impropriety, they get transferred to another less than desirable post, so they learn to do their job, and keep their mouth shut.
I was driving with the race cowl, which has my transponder attached under it, in my cage, to the painter, while going down the tollway. When I got my bill, I saw that I was charged for my cage, and the bike, at the same exact time. I called the toll authority, and explained the situation. They stated that even though they have cameras at each plaza, they cannot use them to dispute an overpayment, just if someone did not pay the toll. I realize it was my error in not removing the bike transponder from the cowl, but how can I drive 2 vehicles through a plaza at the exact same time? I had to pay double the amount. Now I avoid the tollway like the plague. I think someones pockets are lined, and very deeply, and those pockets do not belong to me.
