End of break-in

I changed my oil 3 times before the 600 mark... might be overkill, but I changed shortly after getting it home, at about 100 miles, at about 400 and then again at 600. The first time, I had metal flakes and "metallic paint" looking oil, second time more "metallic paint" looking, less flakes, last time, just like a normal oil change.

But for sure before or at 600, change the oil and get yourself a good filter, not the motorcycle filter that came with it (do the search...).

Thanks for the info man.

Break In?? What Break In!
Ride it like ya stole it!
The factory red lines each & every bike on the test rig (so do auto manufacturers)
Just make sure the bike is warmed up and never let the engine 'load' up.
Always done that with all my bikes & never had issues.

Even got told that by my Yamaha Dealer when I picked up my brand new V Star 650 Custom!
I've always done this with motors all my life. Anyone that says that bearings etc need to 'bed in' are talking "BS" there should be no metal to metal contact, thats what the thin layer of oil is there for to prevent.
I work as a mechanic at an engine reconditioners on everything from lawnmower engines all the way up to huge 16 litre diesels. The principals are all the same.

I pretty much did the same. 150km oil/filter, 500km oil, 1000km oil/filter

the first looks the worst, dark metallic paint is what I thought it looked like. The second looked way better and the third looked like fresh oil.

I ran my engine through the rev range during the first 150km like the motoman break in talked about in that article. It sounded reasonable to me and since the book states prolonged rpm I figured whats wrong with quick blasts up and down. Lots of stop and go acceleration in town for me during the first few hours.

Bike has 2500km now and I just blasted a 30 min prolonged ride on Canada's SuperBike Hyway 407 at 160km/hr. The bike runs like a champ. And no I wasnt really speeding and I think I only passed a handful of cars. I think the average speed on that 407 is 140km/hr. With my speedo being off about 15km at that speed I'm like with the flow...BTW the RPM is up in the 8-9 thousand range...I'm planning on -3 rear sprocket soon...

just outta curiousity, can anyone tell me what RPM their bike cruises at at 65MPH in 6th gear? i was on the practicing getting used to freeway riding yesterday going about 65MPH in 6th, and i think it was hoovering around 5600RPM. but, it was at night and i was trying to concentrate on the road. so i didn't get a really good look. the engine sounded rather loud- even with my earplugs, helmet etc. i knew i was in 6th, cuz i couldn't click up anymore...

That sounds about right. Wait until you start cruising down the interstate with the bike in 4th or 5th gear and the engine is screaming at 7-8K rpm! That's an awesome sound/feeling!

I have done that was running about 70mph at about 8grand in 5th.Then you get close to the exit and realize you had a whole gear left. What a waste of a perfectly good gear.:spank::tard:

I rode the bike home from the dealer which was about 75 miles from home and was cruising around 70-80 mph. Hope I didn't cause any major damage to the bike, after this weekend the only one riding it will be the misses so rpm should be below 6k for a while. Should I take it in to get looked at or just wait for the 600 service and ask for them to check for any excessive wear and tear?

thanks for all the replies. :)

well, i'm still technically in break-in period (ie <600 miles odometer). so going over 5000 RPM for extended periods is not good right? I've only been doing the distance of one freeway exit- ie I get on the freeway, get up to 65, then exit right away. It's not a whole lot of distance, but it gives me the experience of the wind, the speed, and the vibrations. For a newbie like me, I need it. I dunno how else am i gonna learn or practice freeway riding if I can't get up to freeway speeds...

Did everyone here wait until after 600 Miles b4 getting on the freeway??

Just got mine out of the break in period and oh is it glorious! This bike has insane amounts of power past 6 thousand rpm's. Took her up to the freeway today and got her up to some pretty insane speeds, what rush :D

Do you guys think it is bad to go over the 600mi first service... I have about 590mi on my bike and am itching to ride before my first service on Saturday... was thinking about taking it in around 630-640mi..

I talked to my mechanic about this as I was gonna be over before I could get in for my first service as well. He said no worries, as long as it wasn't excessive. You should be fine.

I went over 600 before taking mine in as well, but it wasn't more than 100 miles over.
