You have no idea how many utter morons will stick something like a mattress in the back of a pickup, figure, "it was heavy, so it's not going anywhere" and then take off at freeway speeds without even throwing a strap over it.
I've always thought that was one of those "reckless endangerment" moves that should earn you a loss of license for a year and some jail time. It's no difference than walking around with a gun in your hand, the hammer back and your finger on the trigger. People are killed by stuff like this all the time, and not just on motorcycles. A mattress or box spring hitting your windshield in a car is not going down well either.
