Not that this is a reflection of all of them, but go figure it was a woman driver. like I said not a reflection on them all just 99% of them. I'm an ass. most likely she was putting on her makeup on the way to work. kinda surprised that she didn't get out and start yelling at him for being in the way. again, I'm an ass.
If you're going to do it, be smart about it. Take into account how tight the gap is, what angle the front cars are at, how many cars are in line, how long the light has been red, how likely it is that the light will turn green while you're splitting, etc... I've done it and had the light turn green. That I think is when the people in cars get the most pissed because they start rolling not expecting a bike and all of a sudden you're there.
definitely... as of right now, i only do it occassionally- because i'm usually never in a hurry when i'm riding. i have noticed that cars 2nd or 3rd in line inside the center lane will sometimes will suddenly pull out to the right to change their minds and decide to make a right turn... so, if i split, i always stay to the side where there are cars side-by-side and not on the side where a car could potentially pull over to.

That's actually illegal if I'm not mistaken. You technically can only share on the left side of a lane. So when there's 2 straight ahead lanes, you have to go between them, not to the right of the right hand lane. And you don't ever want to put yourself to the left of a car with either a curb or median, K-Rail, something like that to your left.
