I have Cortech DSX jean jacket for cooler weather,and S&S Seven Sins camo jacket for summer. SS is lighter but little protection. S&S Run with the bulls short gloves. Velcro closure came apart after 3 rides. Seven Sins frayed at end of sleeves after a month. Moment of truth shoes, no complaints. Cortech jacket was only half of the price of S&S but much better armor and quality.
Go to the local stores, see what fits, feels most comfortable. Thats the only way you will find something you like and will wear!!!!Hi guys,
I'm new to riding in general. Have experience from when i was younger. Older now, 39, and in the process of getting a new FZ6R. i wanna make sure im safe while riding.
My questions is, what is the best gear to get to be safe, yet be somewhat cost efficient, and cool ?
I have another thread regarding heat etc.... and someone suggested getting "white" gear. this makes absolute sense to me as in, black vs white, white is gonna be cooler for sure.
What is the best, inexpensive,cool gear to get ?
I live in miami , and temps are pretty hot.
I know the BEST gear is prob more expensive, and I cant blow my load on just gear, but am willing to spend a LIL more to get something better vs something avg.
I am getting the Nexx XR1R carbon helmet ( bad disc in my neck) so need this for lightweight.
but i need to know whats best :
1. gloves, white.
2. jacket or suit, white .
3. boots, white. (preferably some that resist heat on legs from engine,etc)
I will probably end up spending $6500-$7000 on motorcycle, and another $600 on helmet.
I'm looking to add another $800-$1000 for remaining gear.
Any input from you guys is greatly appreciated, and thanks in advanced for any help.
Lots of good suggestions here. Personally I'd get mesh, which is what I wear pretty much 100% of the time in Southern California where we don't have your humidity but do have the heat. In our version of "cold weather" I add a layer underneath, but find that even the zip-in liners on most mesh jackets are too warm for our conditions once the sun is out.
One thing about perforated leather is that it does breathe well, but only if you're moving at a decent clip. In my situation, where I might spend 30 minutes in stop-and-go traffic before I get to the open road, that's a real dealbreaker. No idea where you are in Miami, but I find that in congested metro area, buying gear that will breath decently at slower speeds and in stop-and-go traffic is a good idea, because you will regularly encounter these conditions, even if it's just for getting in and out.
Also, for congested locations, I actually got away from the lightest colors and favor the high-viz yellow. It stays cool and you will be far more visible than you will in white. I rode in an Icon Hooligan 2 Mil Spec Mesh Jacket and found it was great in terms of ventilation, protection and vizibility. Have lost a bunch of weight and the full cut no longer fits me well, so have replaced it with a different one. (My Icon, size medium and in excellent shape will be listed here for sale as soon as I get a couple of pictures.)
For the real hot weather, my gloves are Icon Compound Mesh Long Gloves . Not the best protection you will find, but leather and padding in all the critical spots, decent knuckle protection, gauntlet length and lots of mesh to flow air. I do have a pair of perforated leather gloves that I prefer on less hot days, or days when I know I won't be sitting around much.
Boots are really fit-specific. I like the Sidis as they fit me well. Many of their models come in perforated versions that are good in the heat. I'm riding with SIDI Fusion Air Boots which I find to be a decent combination of protection, amazing airflow and walking comfort.
Any mesh pant will do. I didn't get the pants that matched my Icon jacket because they only came in black. Went for a light grey from another manufacturer. Look for hip padding and knee protection.
Keep in mind that the protection on most of these jackets and pants can be replaced with better aftermarket stuff if you don't like what comes with the jacket. I replaced the cheap foam back protector on mine with a better one that I kept for the next jacket.

Oh, and I always wear a t-shirt underneath. On colder days, sometimes a wind-stop light fleece layer. I find that in warmer climates, layering is always the way to go. Think of your jacket as the outer protective layer and build up extra warmth with other clothing you already have. I do a lot of outdoor stuff, so have every variant on cold-weather gear imaginable and don't feel the need to buy motorcycle-specific cold-weather layers.
If I lived in a rainy climate, I'd have to think about some sort of water-resistant outer layer, but that's not my situation.

I heard a white suit doesnt get as hot, I have a black dainese suit and I can really feel the heat especially in the summer. this is good to wear under your suit especially when it gets hot, it also makes it a lot easier to get in and out your suit

I just wear an under armour shirt under the suit. works great and I can use it outside of riding. I've even got some off brand ones as well that work just as good.
I've never tried those under armor shirts but have thought about it. I think they would show off my hulk status...
