tires and speed??

Had new tires installed today
OEM's had 11,025 miles on them. Rear still has pretty good tread so I am keeping as a spare

I switched to the Michelin Pilot Power 3's and really like these tires. Good grip and cornering was SO much easier.

I also noticed my bike accelerated so much faster than before. Do tires with good tread make that much of a difference?

Compound is definitely a factor, but it could also be the tire itself is lighter, therefore less weight is having to turn when you give it some gas.

I am at 4k miles and got plenty of tread life left. Haven't seen any issues with the middle flattening out thus yet.

Thanks Anthony
I looked at reviews and while I could have gotten cheaper tires I would rather spend the money on better tires
I can tell they grip better than the stock tires but I wasn't expecting such improvement in the acceleration!!
Brakes and tires I want better not cheaper LOL

Friction! With worn more squared off tires, you have a much larger contact patch to the road. New tires are more rounded, less touching the road, less friction.

+1 on getting a sport "touring" tire! Commuting will eat through a track style tire within 3k miles, if not sooner.

Congrats on the new treads!

Another thing to consider is the PP3's might be shorter than your original tires diameter-wise which would be like switching to a bigger rear sprocket.
When I switched from my OEM Roadsmarts to the same-sized Pilot Road 2's, I discovered that the PR2's were shorter when I put my leveling-block under the kickstand - the bike wanted to fall to the right.

The other effect you might see is a change in the accuracy of your speedometer & odometer.

Ouch!! I feel your pain! I commute an hour each way also! Sucks... Kinda takes the desire for weekend fun runs away.. I make myself go for little spins on Saturday or Sunday mornings, but with soo much time spend commuting, need my weekends for other things around the house and errands.

You really dont want to keep the orig. tire as a spare. It is not good to use new and old of same tire because the profiles will have begun to change (flatten) and turning charachteristics will be different, but it can be done. They say that using two different tires though is a bad idea because of the thread and overall profile being different. I have read that that can actually be considered a safety issue.

I noticed acceleration improvement in my new PR3s vs stock BT021s. I know getting going from stop or accelerating, it does seem like it is the compound causing less slipping of the tire maybe as my tire doesnt spin as much now when I do accelerate hard.
Thanks Greg
I was only going to keep as a spare to use if I needed to get it back to service center
I have no way to trailer the bike
Thanks for pointing out the safety issues

So I did get a good style for commuting?? Which is 85% of my riding time
