Vinyl Wrapping

Let's say I was silly enough to but vinyl wrapping matte black or carbon or something to wrap my bike and simply went to ebay.com. What type of wrap would be desirable as far as thickness, brand, ect. All kinds of 3M auctions.


And, if anyone has experience in doing this. How much material would be needed to wrap the whole bike.

There was a thread not long ago, and there are a couple of videos online showing people doing it. Tends to require two people. Use search.

This is the stuff you're looking for. Comes in a variety of patterns and colors: 3M Scotchprint Vinyl Wrap Film Series 1080

Also one thing you want to make sure that you keep in mind is that you will want to order vinyl that is wide enough for your larger panels on your bike or you will have to try to match the edges of the vinyl up to another to keep the look right.

Also you will want to plan how your patterns lay when it comes to carbon fiber. Typically you want everything to have the appearance of going the same direction. Another words don't have one with a pattern like |||||| and then another panel that goes /////. It will look strange up close.

Did some measurements and due to the fairings, ect it looks like 4 foot by 10 foot would be more than enough to wrap everything. I thought about buying one from skinz(about 400.00) with a fancy design but since I have a whole winter with no riding I could try the matte black industrial look just for fun and experience and if I don't like it peel it all off. I contacted an ebay seller who would send me the above amount for slightly over 100.00 bucks shipped.

This is probably a dumb question but if you are going for matte black why not just do plastidip?

I'm not familiar with the details of that material. Is there a way to get it off if you don't like it anymore? That's one of the advantages of wrapping. You can change colors every year if you have the money, the time and the desire.

Looks like it just peels off similar to vinyl when you want to remove it.

I believe that is theRook's front forks pictured. I know he Plastidipped his forks and handlebars right before he traded it in for his Kawasaki. He seemed pleased with the results.

One thing I'll caution you about Plastidip is not to use it on parts that get any kind of wear. I put five or six heavy coats on some heel guards and my heels rubbed through the dip on the first ride after I put them back on. If it's a non wear part, it should work just fine. And it peels right off with no residue.

Same here. I used it for several different parts, plastic and metal, on a couple different bikes and it worked well. The black that is. The white like MistahT said, isn't so good. I used it to cover some accent pieces on some hard luggage and no matter how many coats I put on I couldn't get full coverage. Luckily, after enough coats, it covered it well enough that you have to be standing next to the bike to see those areas, but still. I've also used the glossifier. I've only tried that on the white though, but it did add a shine to it. Don't expect a super shin from the stuff, it's just enough to take the matte finish away and add a slight shine in sunny conditions. The glossifier is also more expensive than the regular colors (got a can on eBay for I think $19 shipped, whereas the regular colors are roughly $7 a can at your local hardware.)

I almost Plastidipped my whole bike because I know the guy thats runs one of the retail stores here in Florida....I did a test on the back tail sections, worked great (white to orange) but when I put a layer of black down, i had a hard time covering the black with the orange.

So...now im looking to pay them to do it using the gallon cans and mixing a custom color....its on my "To Do List Of Things I'll Probably Never Do."

Peeling it off was super super easy and any area with over spray ( was working on the table and found some on the handlebars of the bike) I just rubbed with my finger and it came off

Overall...LOVE the stuff, just not my talents at applying :D
