I am a fairly new rider and bought a new 2012 yamaha fz6r. Does anyone have any tips for breaking these bikes in? Any suggestions/Information would be greatly appreciated!!
Just ride it normally, keeping the following in mind...
- Don't lug it
- Don't redline it
- Don't tour it for 1/2 an hour in the same gear/speed (vary the rpms)...
- Engine brake where you can (helps to seat the rings)
- No WOT for a while...
This is a highly debated topic with two main schools of thought... One is follow mfg recommendations; the other is a hard break in (which I subscribe to).
Your other option is find a good shop with a dyno, and let them run it for you... By the end of the dyno, your bike will be broken in...

Don't follow manufacturer's recommendations.
Stay away from the redline.
Go heavy on the throttle.
Vary the rpm.
Get on the freeway and get off and on every exit.
Change oil early and often.
I broke my bike in by riding it hard, varying the throttle, and changed the oil at 2000. i dont recommend that last step though the clucth wasnt as smooth as it were when i first got it. but other than that my bike is running and pulling strong
I followed the "ride it like you stole it" method of breaking in mine this Feb.
I did not keep it under 10k nor did I not redline it.
At the 600 mile service, I did it and rode from FL to TN.
I also previously changed the oil at 100 miles and then again at 600.
She has nearly 3k on her now and rides like a champ so far.
