For many years, I have ridden with an ICON helmet. I really thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I started reading some reviews and reading entries on this forum and decided to buy a Shoei. Cyclegear was having a great sale about two months ago, so I bought a Shoei RF-1000. I immediately noticed how much lighter it was over the ICON and it seemed to have better visibility. I wanted to give it some time before I passed final judgement and it is time for me to say, I like my Shoei much more than my ICON.

It is uber comfortable.

When I'm wrong, I am willing to admit it... I praised ICON all over this forum, and it is time for me to eat crow.

I am a Shoei convert!

I have two Shoei helmets and like them both. I have had many over the 40 some years I've been riding and they are tops in my book.

I second the Shoei choice...great helmet. I too purchased an RF-1000 at a discount since they were discontinued. Great fit for most although the Arai Profile is supposed to be even better for those with narrower heads. I could not find any Arai Profiles to try on and the Shoei is a 98% great fit for me. Shoei's have great aerodynamics and no "my head is being ripped from my neck" feeling at higher speeds.

I was actually sent some research on helmets, in terms of impact rating... ICON scored higher than most of the high end helmets.

I'm a Shoei convert too. :thumbup: Which Icon did you have? I have the Domain 2 as well as an RF1000. There are things I like about each. The main thing I like about the Domain 2 is the visor and visor locking mechanism. There's less fogging with it than the Shoei. I also like the size of the shell better. But it is heavy, it doesn't fit my head quite as well. I think a lot of it is personal preference and personal fit. Overall I like the Shoei better.

For the pervious 4-5 years I had an ICON Alliance Primary, then purchased an ICON SpeedFreak. I didn't like the SpeedFreak as much as the Alliance Primary, so that is when I started reading more and more about the Shoei.

I found the Shoei to be lighter and more comfortable. Just to make sure I took a little ride with my ICON, then went home and put on the Shoei RF-1000. About a mile or two down the rode, it really became apparent how heavy and cumbersome my ICON was in comparison to the Shoei. I do think head shape is a factor, I think I have more of an oval vs. round head.

I think the visor changing mechanism is a bit harder to operate on the Shoei than the ICON, but I'll get used to it. I think I am just unfamiliar with it.

I'll keep the Speedfreak for wearing when I have to leave my helmet outside on the bike... Won't care if it gets stolen (LOL)!

I didn't notice any real difference...

Truth be told, I'm won't be a good judge of noise levels, I have some slight hearing loss from being around airplane engines.

Maybe Jon Kerr can answer that one... Jon??

The Shoei and the Domain 2 are just about the same for wind noise. Both are much quieter than the cheap HJC and GMax I had when I first started riding. One thing with the Domain 2 as for aerodynamics, it's very stable at speed because of the big vent channels and the spoiler on it. You can actually feel the wind holding the helmet straight from the rear.

I tried on both of the Icon's you've had and neither fit my head at all. Even an XL in the Alliance model felt like it was going to crush my forehead. The Domain 2 is much more of an oval shape and in a large, puts less pressure on my forehead than the Alliance in an XL, but the Shoei puts none at all in a size large.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a Shoei for my next helmet as well. Mine is currently damaged and I'm spending money on fixing my bike first.

Looking at the Shoei RF-1100 Diabolic Revelation but I don't really like the whole "skull" reference, it has on the back.

Call me girly, but the front and sides look good with the angel etc then you turn it on the back it has a red skull with flames!

I'm trying to find a helmet with angels or so on it as a sign to "protect" your head and bring good luck. Don't really like adding stickers/decals/airbrush to a helmet.
