There should be 3-5mm of freeplay as measured at the inside end of the grip when the handlebars are straight (by the book). Only time I took my bike to the dealer they didnt even touch it, but its super easy to adjust yourself- there is a small plastic barrel adjuster on the underside of the control.

When you measure, use a ruler and put your whole hand on the throttle like you're actually riding so you can easier feel where it engages. (adjust it using two fingers and a light turn first, then measure it using your whole hand and you'll see what I mean).

Mostly just dont want it to roll on throttle when you turn the bars to full lock, though on my bike at least the 3mm adjustment still leaves a good 1.5mm freeplay at full lock, so might is actually a bit tighter than that.
