The "Word of the Day" Thread...
I see that many forums have a similar thread that is successful so thought we could give it a try. When the slot is open, simply pick a word, copy & paste it's meaning & provide a source to the meaning posted. Please wait until a day is open before posting a new word. Use the word in sentences in other posts or in responses to posts from the word of the day thread. This is often a fun, quick forum game.
Today's word of the day is "Logic"
Logic (from the Greek λογική, logikē)[1] has two meanings: first, it describes the use of valid reasoning where it is used in most intellectual activities, including philosophy and science, or, second, it describes the study of modes of reasoning (those which are valid, and those which are fallacious)[2][3]. It is primarily studied in the disciplines of philosophy, mathematics, semantics, and computer science. It examines general forms that arguments may take. In mathematics, it is the study of valid inferences within some formal language.[4] Logic is also studied in argumentation theory.[5]
Logic was studied in several ancient civilizations, including India,[6] China,[7], Persia and Greece. In the West, logic was established as a formal discipline by Aristotle, who gave it a fundamental place in philosophy. The study of logic was part of the classical trivium, which also included grammar and rhetoric. In the East, logic was developed by Buddhists and Jainists.
Logic is often divided into three parts, inductive reasoning, abductive reasoning, and deductive reasoning.
