So I'm thinking about getting a tatt of my family crest or badge. There's a few different versions of both and I'm not sure which I'd want to do. Give me your opinions.

Some are a bit more elaborate than others. There are actually some other versions but I think these are the ones I like the most.

Tough to say, because it's going to stick with you for life and it has to be YOUR favorite.

Several Scottish clan badges and crests are shared, so that might factor in as well. How unique are any of these to you and your clan, and which ones are shared with another clan? That might help sway your decision.

For example, my family tartan is totally unique to my family, but the clan badge is shared with the MacPherson clan, do to ancient clan allegiances.

If you are going to get a clan crest/badge/anything make SURE you've researched it thoroughly. Nothing would suck more than getting a tattoo that you later find out isn't correct.

I have my crest done on my left arm , I like the one with the banner just on the bottom but thats just my opinion but like my man up top said research it , and once you think you know , do some more ....i love tattoos im ready to go get another one if i could ever figure out how to post some damn pics id put one up My vote is Option 2

Yeah I've been doing some research on it. The badge in 1 and 4 are unique and we do have a unique tartan. But the crests are shared by a number of clans. They're not exactly the same, but share a lot of similar elements. I'm really leaning toward the first one with the clan motto in the belt.

The clan was a very powerful but very warlike clan that was used by Scottish royalty as a kind of army. They were pretty much bad asses. The motto, Sero sed serio, means "Late but in earnest" From what I've been able to find, I believe that refers to a specific battle where multiple other clans had been fighting each other. The Kerr Clan showed up and wiped out and took over the land of the other warring clans after they'd already weakened each other.

Just so you know, the first one is the one that would be commonly used, as it would normally be fashioned as a kilt pin or belt buckle. The other two crests are rarely seen. The primary identification is naturally the tartan, but the other with the clan motto would be second. I have mine fashioned as the buckle for my kilt.

My clan is descended from Picts, and began as blacksmiths.

We take our badge (above) from Clan MacPherson, with whom we were aligned.

"Touch not the cat bot a glove. 'Bot' means without. The 'glove' of a wildcat is the pad. If the cat is 'ungloved', its claws are unsheathed. The motto serves as a warning that one should beware when the wildcat's claws are 'without a glove'. It is a reference to the historically violent nature of the clan and serves as a metaphorical warning to other clans that they should think twice before interfering with Macpherson business." I think their all pretty cool looking. I would go with the one that means the most to you. I belong to the Thompson clan. But Thompson is so popular over in Scotland and they have so many different tartans. Have you ever heard of the Highland Scottish games? Look it up on line and they usually have all kinds of info on Scottish family history. That is how I found out which tartan to choose and whay my family crest was. Plus, it's fun competing in the games.
