Scary: lost all my coolant today.

This morning while riding to work on the highway I noticed some "mist" land on my visor. Ten minutes later I get to work and notice that the entire side of my bike is covered in bright green coolant, with a puddle forming underneath. The bike didn't overheat, luckily.

I took the right fairing off in the afternoon and found that the radiator cap was almost a 1/2 turn unscrewed. I filled the radiator and overflow bottle (1/2 way) with water for the time being and rode home.

I've never touched the radiator cap, and my bike has 3000 kms on it. Now I'm really curious - has it always been loose (i.e.: from the factory), slowly becoming unscrewed or did someone mess with my bike?

Shouldn't have filled it with normal tap water, should be Distilled Water. Can get it from your local grocery store.

Was the bike serviced at your local dealership?

If so, that was where the cap got unscrewed and why I don't allow anyone to service my bike but me.

no joke, spent two hours going over mine after break in service. it's pretty bad when you can't even trust a certified tech to do their job.

My cap was loose after I had service done at the dealer too. The mechanic tells me "we had to add coolant because yours was low, the cap was loose and must have been leaking".

I haven't been back to the dealer since then, and surprise surprise -- I haven't had any "loose caps" or problems since then.
