Projector Light - Forum Ad?

Ok, So I am getting ready to buy the new headlight for might bike out of this check. My wife and I decided to make the splurge because with the sun setting around 830-845 by mid-late July, we want me to be able to continue commuting to work on the bike until the temps wont allow, or the risk of deer (HIGH where our house is) is too high to risk in the fall. Every day I commute to work I spend about 2.2 gallons of gas vs. 6 in my Blazer. The money saved will also help get the new Cat. Conv. for the truck earlier.

I like the idea of HID but think I might look at the process more or pay someone for the retrofit install. So I have a few questions.

1: The HID light output.. Sounds like 4300k will give me the best viewing distance from what I have read... But seems like 6000K is most popular. Anyone had both of these and able to give input on what would give the most viewing distance and quality? I have ALLOT of country/county roads with not many street lights.

2. I read before that want 35w bulbs.. But I have also read (I believe) that you can put in a 55w and it will give you a stronger light. Is this true and workable on our bike?

3. In interest of trying to help the forum, I clicked on the projector beam headlight banner ad that shows up from time to time.. HID projector KT-MT5

There are allot of grammatical errors on this site that cause me some pause. They show a kit for the 6R at about $89 vs the $150 from Retrofit Source.. Anyone here by chance get their projector from this site above?

Honestly, the Retro Fit source is the way to go. The problem with all the "cheaper" kits is that you get what you pay for. The Retro Fit Source has a 5 year worry free replacement warranty. I don't think that you will get that with many other kits.

I am not sure if the FZ6R can handle a 55W kit or not, but the 35W kit is very very bright. The Kelvin temperature color is more what I would be concerned about. The higher that you go on the scale, the less visibility you have. 4300K has a slight bone white color. I did 5000K on the FZ6R and I am also doing that on the FZ1. 5000K is the closest to pure white you can get, then they start turning blue, and you lose visibility. If it were me, and had the cash for the Retro Fit Source, I would do that, much better quality.

I purchased a kit from retrofit a couple weeks ago and now I don't have low-beams and a week after use some of the plastics on the inside melted. I'm guessing something I did with the wiring is incorrect

Anyways, if you manage to install correctly and could post pics of your process it would really help me a lot. Thanks!


FZwhite, I did get in touch with retrofit and they sent me replacement parts, but the new parts are giving me the same exact results. Better instructions are key IMO.

Rookie, I think I could do the HID, BUT I am not comfortable doing the part of heating and any cutting of the housing. Sorry, a projector write up would most likely not be done buy me. I will probably be paying someone for this install/mod.

Hmm, really not sure what the issue is here, I never had any issues like what you're describing. My only thought would be to contact the Retrofit Source again, and explain what is going on. The wiring is very simple, and almost can not be done wrong. Once you plug in the headlight to the ballast, and wire the ballast to the battery, it is done. You don't have to cut the housing anywhere, and the heating up is really lower temperatures. 250° does not hurt the plastic of the housing. It just gets the glue warm again, and allows the two pieces to be separated.

Huh... Thanks for the clarification.. I thought I read in the thread about it that some cutting/modification was needed on the housing or the projector assembly to make it fit in correctly.

Maybe I could atleast try, and if not successful then bring it or just the assembly in.

It depends on the shroud that you are using I think. If you follow the simple instructions you shouldn't have to cut any of the housing. I do 250° for about 5-6 minutes, work with opening a little, then about 5 more minutes, and then it should be nice and soft, and open right up with a little prying and pulling. Really not too hard. Reading through all the posts is a good idea, we all posted the snags that we hit. Nothing that is too hard, but needed attention.

It's really not that difficult. I have done two setups for the FZ6R and I did one when I owned my car.

Once you heat it for a few minutes, don't use a screwdriver to separate the headlight housing. It mars the plastic housing. I would suggest using a 3 inch putty knife because it's thin and will separate a wider section of glue at one time. Just work a little section at a time, reheat, and continue the process until it pulls apart.

Yes, a single headlight isn't too bad, however if you have two (In my case) there is a lot more wiring and more things to mount...definitely a much harder retrofit. I can't wait to see how mine turns out.

OK.. So with me being on the disabled list and probably shouldnt really ride the bike right now, I think we are going to order the light kit..

After the comments made here, I will TRY to do it myself, if I fail I will just have to trailer it to the shop to have them fix it! BUT IF/When I succeed, I believe that will give me a HUGE Boost in confidence in doing things to the bike and a HUGE amount of satisfaction.

So I am looking at the retrofitsource.com. Here is what I see:
Buy the Sportbike 3 kit for $150 starting.

Side Emitting LED - Anyone have? Easy to do nicely? Worth it? would you do that again?
CCFL Angel Eye = FZ1White - I assume this is what you put on top your shroud to give that circular ring of light? How did you hold it in place? I like the look of that lit up ring, but not sure would be noticable on the 6R.

MINI H1 or (I think) D2S:
What one of these do I want?

Shrouds: Do any of these work, What does anyone have? Have pic you can post of it finished in the bike? These are what look nice to me via the site:

I can't remember what shroud i got but I can tell you there is a lot of modification you have to do to get my shroud to fit I can also tell you that this mod is a lot of work and you have to be very patient also try to come up with your own scene for the leds everyone dose something cool!!!

Thats actually the look I like (in regards to the shroud) The light coming through those little holes around it. So looks like I may not need the angel eyes then.

Okay, if you order the Stage III Sportbike kit, it will be a single Mini D2S projector, and I believe that you can pick between 35W and 55W. 35W is plenty. The H1 projectors that you see as an option are very small. You can see the measurements for each projector here by going to each projector:

We all went with the Mini D2S. If you call and talk to Nate, see if you can get the stage III sport bike kit with these:

They are a better projector than the Mini D2S's, but they are a little longer. They have a wider beam pattern. If you want to see what mine looked like, I had the CCFL Angel Eyes BEHIND the GTI-R shroud. I also had side emitting lights. Here are some pictures here:

That should give you a good idea of how it will look. Like I said, I have the CCFL angel eyes behind the shroud. On my FZ1, I got the LED Angel Eyes, and those are on top, which I siliconed into place. The CCFL's are made of glass, and can break, so you need to use a thin wire with holes in the shroud to make it stay on the front. I would suggest the LED's if you want bright, and they are easier. They are however a little more expensive.

It is extremely large, and like he said, you would have to trim things to get it to fit right. I had the GTI-R on the FZ6R:

As long as you don't pull out a bunch of the factory adhesive when you get the headlight open, you shouldn't need any more of the adhesive. Just make sure that when you pry it apart, and thing that is on the outside of the groove, push it back down in, for when you re-seal it, you need it to be inside there. It is really quite simple. Is there any other questions that I can answer? So to recap:

I had the Side Emitting LED's, cool look. If you want them, go for it, I didn't want them on my latest project, not because they don't look good, but I had a vision, and it didn't include those.

The CCFL Angel Eyes aren't as good as the LED's, are fragile and harder to install. The only up side is that they are cheaper (not by a lot). The LED angel eyes are bright, easy to install, don't require an inverter box like the CCFL's do, and aren't nearly as fragile. If you got the cash, go for the LED's, you won't be disappointed.

If you can, Try to get the Mini H1 5.0's, but the Mini D2S is a very good projector and that is what all the group buyers (myself included) got. I got the Mini H1's on the FZ1 kit, and they are nicer projectors and have a better beam pattern.

Most of the shrouds will work, some may need trimming, or modifications to fit. If you go to the retrofit source page, you can look at each shroud, and they have a dimensions tab and you can see how big they are. Link here:

WOW!!!!! FZ1White!! THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT More detailed information!! Great Links. I will have to look at them more when I get home as we are getting ready to order this weekend.

Especially with that fitment part on shrouds, as mentioned many times here, I do not want to have to do cutting, nervous enough the way it is.

So... I should be able to work on this this weekend if it arrives tomorrow.

However, last time I took my fairings off, those little quick clips gave me a headache getting them out and then back in all the way.

Is there a *easy way to remove and reattach these things?
-I was trying to push them out from under need with the help of a knife pulling from the top.
then on reinsertion i was pushing for everything.. I tried pushing in on the hole part (button) but then had a hard time pushing the center back up once it was all the way in to "lock it"

Ok.. Kit came in the mail today and I went to the post office to pick it up instead of waiting for deliver... Impatient?? I think so! But the lady at the post office when we called said that our mail wasnt going to be delivered otherwise until later in the day.

Opened the box and everything was in there.

Sweet Caroline is now stripped fully naked for me. All the fairings on the side, front and the headlight are removed. The Headlight is seperated from the fairing via the wishbone connecter.

I am super hungry now though so taking a break before I clean the table and bake the headlight for seperation. I have taken a few pictures and also short little video bits with the camcorder. I suck at editing but I will do my best when complete and maybe even put up a little video montage of the steps per a request for another walkthrough by another member (Rookie I believe? Sorry if I am wrong).

Does anyone know how to adjust the beam pattern on the projector? Per the link below it shows that under step 4, that one post must be at the 12 oclock position in order to have a level beam. Mine is slightly off of that to the right and am unable to figure out how to adjust that. Adjusting the headlight aim knobs doesnt seem like it would work because that will only push or pull the reflector casing, not turn it from like 1 oclcok to 12 oclock.
