My attempt at using the fz6r as a dual sport!

If you run the advan tires it actually does quite well on the fire roads as well as some dirt. I camped off mine in the back roads quite a few times. I made an aluminum v-plate for protecting the lower plastice piece under the exhaust. I also ran adv monster lights, and was considering making a set of crash bars to protect the tupperware in case of a mishap. I just changed to the tiger because I needed two up capability.
Don't worry about the nay sayers and non touring folks, these are more than the simple 100 mile a day bike if you want it. I did get the rear revalved so it didn't bbottom out so easy off road.

fz6r is not a bad choice
Kind of thought so. Wasn't sure, because Advan is Yokohama's performance tire brand, but never heard of them making motorcycle tires with that name.
Looks like the Pirelli Scorpion Trail is also available in the right sizes, as is the more aggressive MT-60. I have to think that if you might consider doing anything to require the latter, you should be on an adv bike.
And yeah, there's a piece of me that thinks a Tiger might be what I really want someday, but not if I stay in LA.

I think mods for looks are silly..... bt hey that's your option... now go get some milk and cookies, the wonder pets arre on.
The tiger is a nice bike, but I actually prefer the 6r for that purpose. I also ran the shinko ravens, great for touring, and not terrible for some light off road/backroad exploring. They actually stick pretty good for some fun in the twisties, unless you are a weekend hero.... not a track tire.
So long as I'm in California, where occasional gravel roads in some of the parks are the most difficult stuff I'm likely to get into, I suspect the 6R will do fine for me.
If I find myself moving to Utah, where there is a whole lot more wilderness I'd like to get into, then the considerations will change somewhat. (Though riding the canyons around SLC on a sport bike sure would be fun too.)

I was actually out exploring ended up on a dirt road (ignored the gps) and kept goign to I was in the middle of this creek bed.Lol, looks like more:
