Apparently Maryland law says any modifications to a motorcycle's frame will cause it to fail inspection. Guess we aren't cutting it. Think we're gonna try to mount the tail as high as we can and still have it be stable (and not worry about the subframe as much).

Also thinking about cutting a small piece of the front fairing and attaching back onto the tank. Think it might make the bike look a little more "put together" and intentional. Bolt holes and tabs on the side of the tank right now scream "something's missing" It would definitely help hide some of the dents, but would it look alright?? Still on the fence about it.

I don't like the partial fairing in the example, but with your blue I think it will blend better. I think it's looking great brother!

Is the subframe on those bikes bolted on or welded onto the frame? If you can unbolt it then you should be able to cut and weld it as you see fit. It it's all one piece, then you probably are stuck with it as is. Are custom bikes, like professionally built choppers, not allowed in Maryland? If they are, then why can't you modify the frame? That's what they're doing.

All in all, I'm loving your build. I'm regretting not trying something like that when I had my Ninja 500. Good luck figuring out how to incorporate that tail.

The frame is one big solid piece. To get it through inspection we're going to toss the original tail back on it, then mount the CBR tail but not chop anything. I think the plan is to weld on tabs to put bolts through. There are a few threaded holes inside the fairing we can use. Chop the seat foam but leave the hooks underneath so the seat still latches in place without flopping around.

No idea how custom things can be built and registered. Going to look into it further.....

Went to start it today, guess the battery didn't refurb the way we thought, we're gonna need a new one. Also, it idles and runs fine until you hit about 40% throttle and then it dies. How are the carbs still dirty?!?!!? Frustrated. Thankfully a 250 forum guy about an hour away said he'd help make them run perfectly. Gotta plan a trip!

Sad news, my friends. It looks like the street fighter project maybe be over. To be honest, this bike had an unclear history. I wanted to build something cool, kinda wanted a 250 for myself, and my best friend needed a bike but had no money. The bike is officially going to him. He wants the tail to be bare and remove the bellypan.... my two favorite parts

But the good news is the bike is going to be daily driven by someone who can benefit from saving gas money and will truly appreciate it. Most of my hard work will in fact pay off.

It still needs to pass state inspection. For that it needs mirrors, gauges, reflectors, and a tail light. We are thinking cheap ebay bar end mirrors if we can find a shop to pass them, vapor (I know, I know, haven't ordered, $$ SUPER tight right now), and R6 tail lights with integrated blinkers are under $30 shipped.

The bike RAN fine. It runs crappy again now. We haven't got it all the way up to temperature (not street legal and tagged yet, just up and down the street) and it almost idles the way it should, but past about 40% throttle it dies. I've cleaned the carbs twice, and now it needs mains cleaned again. Sigh

Do you have any experience with the forks, or know of a link to rebuild the Ninja 250's forks?

My cousin got a 94 (his first bike in general) 16,000 miles for $500 and it ran good enough for me to ride home for him.I'm pretty sure it needs fork seals, I can bottom the front end with 1 arm.

Besides that we can handle the rest.Theres a little rust in the tank so we pulled the tank tonight and he ordered a kit to reseal.It needs tires, fluids changed and its been dropped (low speed) so hes going streetfighter.

So I guess he might need a few tips securing the instrument panel.If you don't mind, i'd like to put you two in contact via email or something.

Sounds great, I'd love to help. I've neber done fork oil, but for this one we're going to pull them off and rip them apart. We'll figure it out.

For an easy street fighter, leave the belly pan and remove the front fairing. Headlight, gauge, mirrors all stay put. Gotta pass inspection first or find something to do with the turn signals tho.
