Exactly, it's an inline 4 designed for some revs. She doesn't really come alive until after 6k, 8-10k is where she likes to be. I rarely use 6th gear on the highway anyways, but am not on for really long stretches on the same highway either. I like to be higher in the RPMs to be able to pass or maneuver as needed. I usually try to stay at 8k. Yeah, might not be as good for gas mileage, but I've averaged very well on my bike (45mpg). I haven't had much testing with the FZ6 cams and new map though.

Even my cheapie eBay windshield makes a significant difference at highway speeds!
Also, get right up on the tank and rest your legs on the fairings, pull your body down. Keeping at the front of the bike will keep you in a calmer position with regards to wind.

I'll try the lower seating position too, I'ms till trying to get a feel for a good distance to stay out of the wind patterns of the other vehicles especially big rigs. I thought I was really far back from one and my fiancee commented I was riding "in the tail wind" of the truck. guess i'm still a n00b 
Get out from behind anything big. Their effects can last.
And maybe it's just the highways I ride, but I get some crazy wind blasts from the sides or diagonal... must be all the open space then vehicles swirling it up. I dunno.
I will say be loose on the bars. Grip as lightly as you possibly can while maintaining control. As the front end moves around slightly trust that the bike will stay straight. Once you master that, highway riding becomes a piece of cake.
