Hot weather gear..??

So all last week the temps here in Central Texas were in the mid to upper 90's... looks like summer is already here, if this is how it starts off the temps by July and August will be well into triple digits... Away for those riders dealing with these kinds of temps how is your gear (jacket) working at keeping you cool..???

Right now I'm using a textile/mesh combo jacket that gives good air-flow but if I should good down the mesh will be toast.... For those people using leather or full textile hows the air-flow..??? And if you would post what jacket you're using..???

I have a Joe Rocket jacket that can transform winter/summer vice versa. On some hot days it's just palin hot wile standing still, but riding is nice. I have the padding to protect me and it's quite cool.

Cooling Vest

I ride year round in Arizona... Yea, Yea, Yea, It's a dry heat and all that.

I purchased a cooling vest and Motoboss Mesh Jacket. I was skeptical, but it works!! You soak the cooling vest in cold water, put it on and ride. The vest acts like an Evap Cooler and your core gets cold. I know it sounds strange, but it works!! You have to get past the wet feeling when you first put it on, but that takes about a minute. To enhance the effect, I wet an old T-shirt put it on, then the vest, then the mesh jacket. You can also wet the vest, put it in a plastic bag and put it in the fridge the day before, if you know you are going on a long ride.

I can't take credit for this trick, but a buddy of mine freezes water in a gallon size zip-loc bag, and takes it with him on longer rides. It will melt, but still be cold water, then he pours it on the vest to re-wet & cool it. I just stop at the Circle K and buy a bottle of cold water and re-wet it.

I bought both at Cycle Gear...

yeah those are all good options, I already have a mesh jacket.... hopefully someone that is wearing full textile or leather will chime in... in a fall mesh is just going to fall apart, but for cooling its great... plus I ride to work every day and ride the twisties on the week-end so I guess I'm looking for something that I can wear all the time...

love the Joe Rocket but again the majority of the jacket is mesh...

don't think I could pull off the cooling vest for work... being wet I mean, I'd have to change tops once I got there...

I hear you on that one. I also have an Alpine stars Octane Leather jacket. I wear this jacket about 98% of the time. It gets up into the 90's out here from time to time and while you're hot while waiting at a light, you're definitely more protected and the trade off to me is worth it. I don't mind a little sweat.

I have the partial perforated Frank Thomas XTi 2 pice suit. I haven't ridden in 90º+ weather yet with it, but it has been in the 80's. The venting in the chest and out the back is pretty good. The arms are not vented at all and have no air flow. BUT it also keeps the sun from beating on my arms. If you're rolling along in the mountains it's fine. But getting stuck in traffic behind cars going from light to light, it sucks. One thing I did buy when I got my leathers is a Nike Pro Hyper Cool long sleeve under shirt. I couldn't believe how much this thing helps even under a heavy leather jacket.

It's the classic question, would you rather sweat or bleed? I have a textile Shift Racing jacket that I've been wearing for a while and used today and it's good in the heat. (It's in the 80's here today and I was actually quite cool in it on my ride today.) I also have a Joe Rocket full mesh jacket. I haven't worn this in quote a while. That thing feels like you're wearing a t-shirt. It's great in the heat. BUT if I were to go down, the places I have armor would be fine (Elbows, shoulders, and back) but anything else that may hit the ground will be in bad shape. There's just no structure to it and the mesh is just plastic fibers essentially. It'll melt right to the skin. Being the Gear Nazi I am, the only time I'm going to wear that anymore will be to the summer time car/bike show about 5 miles form my house in stop and go traffic. I'm not even really comfortable with that but 100º at 5:00 in the afternoon in El Cajon in a bunch of stop and go traffic going 25 MPH, I'll take that little chance.

I rock the Icon Arc Mesh Stealth jacket. It has some mesh to allow air flow with the leather kind of wrapping the whole jacket together for a little more protection. It's black so even on some of the hot days we had here it's not too bad.

I have the Alpinestars Stage Perforated Leather Jacket. I have the same experience as everyone else. It does get hot when stopped in 80+ temp, but it feels good when ridding.
