Earthquake in D.C.

Just got word from my wife there was a 5-6 magnitude Earthquake in D.C. I think a few forum members are up that direction. Hope everybody is safe. Between this and Hurricane Irene seemingly headed your direction, I feel for you

I hope the same. I still remember not having running power / water for weeks after Katrina. I wouldn't wish that on anybody...

I felt it here in PA too. It didn't really bother me, because I had no clue what an earthquake felt like. Everyone was talking about it at the office. Productivity went down 50%....:rof::rof::rof::rof:

Quite rare to have one of that magnitude that far east. It's fairly inactive compared to the west coast. Being from Alaska, 5.8 barely sparks anything near panic. Though, I doubt many buildings out around D.C. were designed with large quakes in mind.

Ugh, being about 30 miles from the center of it SUCKED. My kids are freaked out and my house was def not built to deal with a quake and i now have a nice big crack in my wall in the basement, AWESOME! but on the plus side my insurance will cover it (or so it says). A lotta things fell off walls and shelves, my dog went crazy and peed on the floor (STUPID DOG!) and everyone now is just kinda hanging out making sure everything is ok with everyone around... so far so good... Thanks for the concern guys!! As for the hurrican its supposed to nail us this weekend so no i'm going to go for a ride to prevent anger this weekend when i can't ride at all...

Thats not a bad size EQ, us California folks are used to it. If its the roller type, it shouldnt be that bad, but the sudden jolts, now those suck!!

I will still take an EQ over a tornado or hurricane anyday!!!

Was kinda funny, all of a sudden I felt something...to me it felt like a shitload of turbulence like when a semi truck passes you going the opposite direction, except this felt like passing 10 semi trucks, and I hadn't passed anybody. I thought maybe it was some fluke wind gust or something.

Got into town and cops were out everywhere, and a country government building was evacuating. I still didn't put 2 and 2 together...I thought it was a bomb threat or something.

Get back in the house and pull out my phone I have a ton of texts asking if I am OK, and one from the wife saying there was an earthquake. Only then did I notice all the pictures etc were crooked and a bunch of stuff was knocked over.

My wife was in the hospital in Richmond when it happened, with a patient. She said the hospital shook so bad she had to sit down. She said it was pretty scary and there's a lot of evacuations down there etc.

CJ, sucks about the basement. They'll fix it. OK, I'm gonna go tour the house and make sure nothing is damaged.

If you ever visit the South / Southeast, you'll find out everybody here is gun shy of everything. You mention "earthquake", its the end of the world. You mention "blizzard", its a "snowocalypse", and you mention hurricane, everybody is still gun shy from katrina and stocks up 2 months worth of water, can food, and gas.

It never ceases to amaze me how if it snows 1/2" in the winter, literally, EVERYTHING shuts down for a day or two, meanwhile northerners laugh...
