It was a record setting heat day so all the oil and grease was up on the surface and swimming and I finally dumped the bike at about 40 mph. I was hoping to slide with it but was launched.

Glad to hear you're on the mend...

But, not to be jerk, I'm wondering about your "Lock up the front brake" tactic. It sounds like your launch got caused by a high side - there's not really any other reason I can think of that would kick you off the bike the way you were. Maybe the front wheel gained traction while locked, resulting in the catapult.

Instructors I know say that if you're going to dump, stay with it until the bike is down, then separate from it ASAP if possible. That way you won't get crushed if the bike starts to tumble.

If you're starting to go sideways with the rear locked, keep it locked and attempt to regain your line. If you let it go, and the wheel gains traction (by starting to turn), you'll find yourself sailing by high side again when the bike snaps straight.

Please don't think I'm attacking you or your actions - I'm just wondering if you could have avoided the catapult....

Good question.
With the rear wheel locked up it naturally slid to the downhill line which put me opposite the line for the turn. Releasing the brakes allowed the bike to straighten up and drive in a straight line but not necessarily the one I wanted. This occurred twice and I had to resort to extremely light braking which was never going to slow the bike in time for the corner. I was already in an extreme outside line at this point.
Using the front brake to drop the bike worked as planned. The bike went down on it's right side and slid in coordination with the rear brake bringing the rear around for a nice sideways slide. The impact of a bike hitting the pavement at about 50 mph is pretty severe and that is what bounced me off as the bike stopped before the guard rail. I still had lots of momentum and that's what took me into the guard rail. It was a carefully coordinated low slide but the impact of the bar end on the ground and sudden stop tossed me forward.

The instructors are right as I've done this before. Ride it out and separate ASAP when the speed is down. I've even stood up and surfed the bike before while standing on the engine case on a CB350. This time I just got bounced off is all. I'm just glad it wasn't a high slide as I would have had more altitude and sailed right over the guard rail and died on impact about 150 to 200 feet below.

If I could get the video all the answers are there but it looks like the video is toast.

I went to the dealer today to look at the bike. CRAP!

When I crashed, I had about a 20 minute wait for the ambulance and I carefully looked at the bike to see what I broke and what I saw at the dealer was very different. There were no dents in the tank,no scraped up brake resevoir, both mirrors were on the bike and the fairings were in 1 piece. When I looked at the dealer's back room, the front headlight cowl was all busted to hell both mirrors torn off and fairings all busted up as if they had been ripped off the bike with the bolts in place. Dents on both sides of the gas tank, bent front rim and forks and all kinds of busted pieces from the front end.
When I was hauled away in the ambulance, the bike was drivable and none of the stuff was busted off. Looked like a gorilla got a hold of the bike and he just started tearing off anything he could get a hold of. The windshield was shattered and torn off. I had a perfect view of that from where I sat about 5 feet away and the windscreen was untouched. I had just cut off 2.5 inches and the thing was untouched in the crash. Either they towed the bike with a standard wrecker and trashed the bike as it swung around or they started it up and had some fun wrecking it in the yard. I know AAA puts the bikes on a flatbed but the tow co that pulled it off the freeway could have hooked a chain to the bars and just dangled it with a restraining chain off a regular wrecker.
The service manager said he received it this way with bent forks, the PCV pulled off it's mount as if someone tried to snatch it already. It sat in a lot in Long Beach for 2 nights so who knows what happened to it. The insurance company told me it had $9800.00 damage and was totaled. So they sent me to another adjuster to deal with the total loss and they will tow it to the loss yard to be sold as scrap. Dealer said the frame was fine and I could see my frame slider worked fine as did the stock bar end. The damage was not nearly this bad right after the crash. It's like getting into a fender bender and you need a new quarter panel on your car and when you get the car into the shop, the whole body is smashed up and they total it on you. No one admite to anything and you get the shaft.
So I totaled up all my invoices for add on parts and wrecked riding gear and submitted them. $4200.00 worth of upgrades and gear on that beast. They wouldn't let me go get tools and pull off anything and with busted ribs and a sprained shoulder pretty hard to get anything off the bike in my condition anyway. So it looks like I'm screwed and will probably eat the whole thing as a loss. I had gap insurance so I won't have to pay out any monthly payments anymore. I'll have to close my bank account to keep the lender from auto pulling the payment on the 2nd of May while I wait for AAA to close the deal.

Insurance is required but didn't cover squat. My private medical covered my injuries and the gap insurance will cover the lender. The vehicle insurance I paid to AAA won't cover squat even with a $100.00 deductable.

So I guess they will toss me a bone of a couple of dollars and tell me to eff off... We'll see....I don't have much faith in insurance companies.

Dude I am so sorry to hear about that. When you first described the incident it didnt seem that the bike was totalled. yeah sure a few things probably needed to be fixed and/or replaced but damn, totalled. Thats just B.S. My thoughts are with you.

The one thing I wish, that could save your ass in this situation would have been if you were able to take pictures...even a simple bystandard with a phone to send them to your email...anything. Im so sorry to hear about this john and I wish you the best....

So lessons learned...If you can or have someone else if you can't, get pictures so that the tow company doesn't totally destroy your property. Here in CA if the damage is above $1,000.00 you can be charged with a felony as vandalism.

If I had pics, I doubt the Police would do anything anyway but maybe I would have had a better bargaining position with the insurance company.

They haven't said a word to me after I sent them the $4200.00 in parts and replacement gear charges on top of the bike...He He He He.....

Most of the stuff had about 1000 miles on it so they really can't say it is used and some of the stuff had less than 5 miles on it. If they want to go to court, I can accommodate them and paper them to death. Learning to be a Paralegal on your own helps to make court VERY expensive for them if you can wait.

It was just a bike so I'm not all broken hearted...I want justice now. Ribs hurt like hell!

Who towed your bike? Did you call and arrange the tow truck or was it called by the police? If the police called the company, then the officer should have filled out a form (called a CHP 180) stating the damage to the bike, then the tow company signs the form and gets a copy.

dang... with the damage to the bike + the $4,200 it's more than likely they'll total the bike out... but, hopefully they'll at least give u something so u can buy something new. do keep us posted on your recovery and bike shopping...

the Repsol 1000rr is a really nice bike! i saw one over at palmdale when i was shopping... but, it's nearly $14K new! plus, the plastics are limited run, and if u ever damage them, it will be nearly "impossible" to replace. this is not to discourage you- but just to let you know what you would be buying into...

that said, the price of new 2009 FZ6R's in so cali is oddly, still not too bad, mainly because it's not a very popular model and sit in dealer showrooms for a long time... R6's, however, are a completely different story. -every- dealer wants to ass rape customers on that bike- esp after the japan quake... this is why i was forced to go to craigs list. but, i got extremely lucky to find the bike that i found...

i think if you're patient and do your homework & roadwork, you'll eventually be able to find a good deal. just takes a lot of gumshoe work...

I did not know about this form CHP 180. The CHP had the bike towed as I was incapacitated as soon as the Paramedics arrived. Cervical collar and backboard hurt the busted ribs like heck. Paramedics arrived before the CHP. CHP were just asking about speed and such to see if they could issue a ticket before I was put into the ambulance.

I work for Honda so I can get a black RR for about 10K. Was looking for a red one tho. The Repsols are all at the dealers starting at 14K so that isn't going to happen. None are available to Associates or Contractors. I can get very limited stock due to the Japan disaster.
Cars are no longer available at all. We will see what they offer and what I can afford.
I had a thought but don't know if it will fly. My medical all went through my personal medical insurance. If I alert them this was due to an accident, will they bill the insurance company? If so maybe I can bargain to get a better payout? Probably not but I'm needing advice from every angle at this point.

They said the bike alone was $9800.00 to repair and the $4200.00 is on top of that. I've already been told it's a total and I'm just waiting to see what the payout will be.

Spunky, Roaddawg is correct about the CHP180, anytime a vehicle is towed they have to fill out this form spelling out the reason for the tow and storage authority. I believe it is filled out in the case of tc's (traffic collisions) as well, in the event a vehicle becomes incapacitated. the bottom line is, the CHP 180 provides a description and condition of the vehicle. Something to check and see if it was completed or not.

Since the CHP towed the bike, the would have filled out the CHP 180. Go down to the local office and get a copy of the 180. On the bottom of the form, there's a place for descirption of damage and property. The condition of the vehilce PRIOR to the tow company taking it would have been completed by the CHP. The whole point of this form is to document the damage and property before the tow takes possession. That way, if there is something missing or more damage, like your saying, then the 180 should prove it. Tow companies can be shady, that's the purpose of this form.

Also, the officer was just trying to get a statement for the collision report...not to give you a ticket, but to be able to complete the report without having to track you down later. It's quite rare that the CHP would issue you a ticket out of the collision unless they had a witness to your unsafe driving or very compeling evidence to the cause of the collision. Did you tell the officer that you hit oil on the ground causing you to dump it? That would make the collision an "other than driver" and not necessarily your fault.

I told them oil or grease had to be on the road as the rear tire skidded with very light brake pressure and it skidded 2 times. I'll call tomorrow and get the report number and then go get copies of that and the 180.

Sorry to hear you went down and hope you recover quickly.

Unfortunately (in my limited experience) it's gonna take awhile to get a check from them. It took me nearly 2 years to get a check from one auto accident.

I eventually got my medical bills, vehicle repairs and another $4000.

They wanted to settle quickly for a very low amount, which didn't even cover the car. Then after several months of bickering. I told them I was going to see a chiropractor. They instantly doubled the amount they offered. I refused that offer and then went to a chiro for over a year. After that was done I still didn't like their offer so told them I should see a physical therapist. Of course this prompted a bigger offer that I finally took.

So hold out and make sure everything is taken care of exactly how you want and that it is fair!
