dirty oil

i was surprised how dirty my oil looked after 1150 miles.....usally go about 1000 miles.

maybe some clutch action between 2900 and 4100 miles.... thats one reason i run the rottela better to chang more offen.

i can't see how yamaha says to change the oil every 4000 miles seems like a long time between changes....try to ride into early dec before i change oil again. winter sucks but fall is cool you can tell i don't have sleds or ski.

chain question

when everybody adjust there chain do you use the same point.... or do you use the top side plate and then the bottom part of the side plate on the chain

i been trying to use the same refrence point.

Were you checking it or draining it when you noted the dirtyness.
Most oil after a while looks dirty coming out the drain plug.

same point thats what i thought.... seems like alot play when you figure in the 2 inches.

the oil was dark when i drained the oil..... 1st time since i had the bike did seem dark... might be because i did not change the filter last time also..

Dirty oil means its doing its job not a bad sign.its keeping the engine clean

I just did my 4000 miles oil change over the weekend. It was a little dirty but nothing unusual. In a car I would have put another 2000 miles in it... i will be sticking with Rotella full synth and Mobile1 oil filter. And for the chain, I will agree with you guys, 2''! I did a little maintenance on the Ducati of my boss the other day. And it's very clear, 23-25 mm on the big sticker on the swingarm. I took my bike 2 days later and just did a quick check on the chain and I was like, oh shit! So I got on a little panic mode and tight it up to about 30 mm and went home and look in the manual. 45-55 mm, humm ah well...

Advance Auto part. M1-110 about $10.00. Don't forget to get the tool to remove / install them too right at the end of the isle... They're a bit bigger than stock, so you just add a little more oil. (3Qrt) I'm not that smart, got the tip from a other thread...:canada:

How dirty it looks doesn't mean the oil is bad. If you really want to know the condition of your oil you can send it into BlackStone labs for $25.

Why? Sound like mixing Coke and Diet Coke together... I've been running the synth without any issue.

Do you seriously change your oil every 1000 miles? That seems like a waste of money and resources....or are you only logging 1000 miles every three months or more? It just seems excessive to me when the engines and oil are designed to use longer.

Ya, there is really no reason to change the oil on a modern bike like this every 1k...

The only bike I changed the oil on like that was the Honda Rebel. The manuf. said every 4k, but there was no oil filter on those bikes. So we did about 1500-2000 mile changes.

All I have to say is, if you track your bike I agree with you change your oil and filter every 400 to 600 miles. But for street use don't worry about it. Modern oil, especially synthetic oil will last easily 4000 miles. Riding around on the street with the usual hard acceleration won't kill your bike. Thrust me, those engine are design to get some serious abuse. All I can suggest you, put your Rotella 5-40 syth with a new filter each time (I'm using the Mobile M1-110) and forget about it. Check your level one a week or about every 500 miles, and enjoy your worry free ride my friend!

cheap insurance.... i go between 1000 and 1500 miles most times.

just run 10w-40 full synthetic like the owners manual says, the "10" is for the cold starts, the "40" is for when it warms up, it is already designed for that.

You're not gaining anything by mixing synthetic and dino oil, that's like mixing mud with water and expecting them to stay separated, you've basically blown away the reason for putting synthetic in by mixing in any dino oil. That's a whole other debate as to how well one vs' the other works, but if you believe synthetic works, don't' dirty it up with dino!

As to how often to change, you can change every 1000 if you want... it is only wasting time/money, it won't hurt the engine (but it won't hurt to wait 'till 4000 miles either, or three months, whichever comes first). Save that money for other mods.

100% agree with dart. Pick one or the other but don't mix Synth and dino oil. What I do, with all I ever own is convert them to syth and stick to it.

That's what I always did with any thing with an engine I ever own. My cager (Suzuki Aerio 2006) have about 112 000 miles. I've beat the hell out of it, still! After I broke the engine in I replace the oil with Mobile 1 full synth. I used 5w30, 0w40 and now I'm using 0w20. Yes, 0w20! I change oil every 7500 miles and even with so much mileage and with very light weight oil I barely burn 1/2 quart. So once the engine is all broken in well, use the good stuff and make sure you have enough...:canada:
