I use DuPont dry wax Teflon... it's fairly clean (no oil slinging), but it's hard to tell how much you have on. There are rave reviews on it, just google it, and I'm 3600 miles with no issues...c below)
I got my bike home from the dealer, cleaned it with kerosene, and put this on.
It's a personal choice when it comes to lubes, so take everything you read with a grain of salt. Some have used WD40 with no issues, others claim it's not o-ring safe.
I did have a spot o' rust after my last ride in the rain when I didn't dry it down and check the chain, but I cleaned it, and re-lubed with this and haven't noticed an issue.
I check my chain once a week when I check the tires. I'll sometimes just hit it with a few sprays of lube. If it looks grimy, then I'll kerosene it and relube..
Biggest thing to me is to just keep an eye on everything (good weekend project with the kids, we'll do their bicycles at the same time) and lube/clean/change as needed.
