Can anyone help me to understand motogp 2012 rules

Hello guys,

I`ve became a big fan of motogp since a couple years ago... And i like to understand the rules. I know for the 2012 season the engines will be 1000cc again, but i also know some manufacturers may remain with the 800cc engines...

"MotoGP™ - As of the 2012 season, the maximum engine displacement permitted is 1000cc with a maximum of four cylinders and maximum bore of 81 mm - 2-stroke engines are not allowed. A maximum of 6 engines may be used by each permanent contracted rider for all the scheduled races of the season. Penalty for infringement of this means the rider will start from the pit lane 10 seconds after the start of the race.

From 2012, teams not entered by one of the major manufacturers may seek CRT status. Teams entered as CRT will benefit from less restrictive rules on the number of engines that may be used in a season, and the fuel allowance during a race is larger. Under the "Claiming Rule", teams operating under CRT status agree to allow up to four of their engines per season to be claimed, after a race, by one of the major manufacturer teams at a cost of €20,000 each including transmission, or €15,000 each for the engine alone."

I copied the text above from the motogp official website, but i didn`t understand this very well (Maybe because english is not my native language)... What does it exactly mean? Does anyone already know what displacement each team/rider chose?

To my knowledge every team is now using a 1000cc engine. What they're doing by having the CRT teams is allowing more teams who aren't full blown manufacturers (they may be a frame designer, but don't build and design their own engines) enter into morogp using production based engines. Teams entered as manufacturers can not have an engine that has any component be production. It has to be a 100% prototype. Now the claiming rule will keep these teams who are getting into MotoGP much cheaper by using production engines from dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars into their engines (which is the point of being a CRT, you don't spend that much money) Think about it, if you drop $150K on building a"production based" engine, you don't want that engine claimed by one of the manufacturers for a measly $20K.

Basically they're trying to get more teams involved, bring the cost down, and make the racing better. When Moto2 came out with a formula with pure prototype chassis and production engines, the competition blew away the competition in Moto2.

why is it that two strokes arent allowed in any of the pro races any way? the new ones are ten times cleaner then they were... and i sure as hell miss the noise and smell of them at the races!

I agree, one of the top 5 bikes id like to ride is a rzv500 lol.
Heck, talk about a cheap way to make a high powered motor lol.

But if 2strokes return, every Bubba with a garage could afford a team and it would get stupid.
I love to ride 2strokes, but a 2stroke that (could) compete with most of the 4strokes raced these days would probably be unpopular due to the vibrations, the snappy power and traction issues.

Id love to see it as well tho

specialy on the dirt, i think the return of the 250cc 2 strokes...could give the 4 strokes a run for there money... specially if they fuel injected them hahah..that snappy power is what made you wonder how the hell the pros made it look so easy
