Most of my travels have been local... however now that I'm getting more comfortable on the bike, I'm going to take a few different trips...

First one... to Tortilla Flat... has good switchbacks... nice scenery

Another one... to Roosevelt lake... nice sweepers... a few tighter turns...

And... when I get REALLY brave... to Show Low via Salt River Canyon (zoomed)

^^^ This one was kind of scary in a car... late at night. The road twists around the canyons... and there's a HUGE drop off on the left side...

I leave for the Black Hills tomorrow. Riding out with 2 buddies of mine.

We're not exactly sure which roads we're going to ride when we get out that way... but it doesn't really matter. A week on the road is going to be awesome.

I just recently moved from Rapid City, SD. Awesome place to ride. I just hope you have good weather, it's not unheard of to get a snow storm there at this time of year.

heres my route for this thursday. not the most exciting, but definetly the longest so far.
right now, i just ride for commuting purposes, but im moving and have a 150 mile trip to make.

Thanks. :) Ya, we've been watching the weather pretty carefully. Last minute change of plans, as we were supposed to be riding to Kentucky, but all it's doing out east is rain...

Well, I'm back from my trip. Silly me, thinking we would escape the rain if we went west. :rof: The day I left was my first official "ride in the rain" experience, and I have to say, I'm quite proud of myself. It was pouring!! But me, my FZ6R, baggage and all, headed out.

I traveled with an FJR and a Honda CBR F4i. Unfortunately the CBR blew a spark plug about 800 miles into our trip (in Oacoma SD), the threads in the cylinder were stripped, and after spending all day at a repair shop hoping for the best, he had to rent a trailer and drive the bike back home. But that didn't stop me & my buddy with the FJR -- we continued on.

And OF COURSE it rained the entire day we were at Mt. Rushmore and riding through the state parks... Not only did it rain, the fog was SO THICK it was impossible to see more than 2 car-lengths in any direction... so riding the hairpin turns up/down the area was delightful </sarcasm>. I am extremely proud of myself for keeping my bike up... I was terrified to say the least.

My saddlebags each scraped my rear tire at some point during the day (only a tiny bit of damage to the pads) -- but it made my day when I saw the damage... because it means I must have been leaning a lot more than I thought I was, and since I've always had anxiety about leaning, I guess I "did good". Haha.

Unfortunately since it was so rainy, I don't have many pictures from the trip -- but here are a couple.

Oh... and the FZ6R was awesome throughout the trip. Yea, I'm a little stiff/sore, but not b/c of the bike. I think my buddy on his TOURING bike feels 10x worse than I do. Hahaha.

(the one that's all fog is SUPPOSED to be of Mt. Rushmore... but obviously we couldn't see $#iT. Oh, and the bugs in SD were hellacious)

That sucks about the weather. Hopefully you can make it back to SD when the weather is better because the Black Hills really are beautiful and there's great road as I'm sure you found out. I lived there for 3 years and I never made it to the Sturgis bike rally which is huge. I didn't have a bike until my last one there but I happened to be out of town anyway. I would like to do a ride there for that sometime in the future.

Oh... I had a great time... no doubt. (even with the rain) I've been in Sturgis (accidentally) when the rally was going on, or just beginning, it was insanity to say the least. I'm sure I'll head back to SD on the bike again, it was a great ride out -- and the roads are awesome. I've been there several times before (with a car) and remember how fabulous it was.
