I really hate all the wreck posts. makes me think twice about riding, so I usually don't read them. This in particular is horrible and I feel very bad for everyone involved. I have an 8 year old and I started letting her on the back at 7 around the local neighborhood. She can reach the pegs fine. I don't take her very far though and that is on my cruiser. I have not let her on the fz6r yet and don't intend to until she is like 12. I have taken her about 30 miles on my brothers can am spyder though.

This is really sad. As a truck driver myself I know how easy it is to lose motorcycles even with all the mirrors we have. They just disappear.

Initial reports show that it was in fact, an accident. If he wasn't under the influence of drugs or drink then I hope they leave it as it is, an accident.

A few things:

A truck that big doesn't stop on a dime and suddenly pull into a U-turn.

Note that a witness said they guy had "burns on both arms" (I presume bad road-rash, since there was no fire), and "both sides of his face were scratched up."

Hate to be a jerk in the immediate aftermath of a tragedy but sounds to me like the guy was following way too close (you never want to be in a place where you can't see a truck's mirrors), not paying attention to the truck slowing ahead of him, and wearing the minimal helmet possible.

That, plus a small kid who could not possibly cooperate and may have been creating a distraction is a bad set of circumstances to be in.

I'd say it was probably a preventable accident, but doubt they'll do anything. Getting from "you could have behaved in a way that would have avoided this" to "you behaved so irresponsibly that it's a crime" is a huge leap and one proscecutors will rarely make in the absence of lots of other evidence or supporting circumstances.
