Triple Tree Crown Nut

Tried to search, got 7 pages and none seem to really have the info I wanted...
So guess I'll just ask...

I want to remove this piece so I can put a RAM mount there.

Would I be alright, or do I need to do something like hollow out the top part of the nut, making a hole?

It's called a yoke nut, and yes, you need it. I don't know what size it is, but im sure you can find the proper size/ proper nut to replace it with.

The parts site i was lookin at called it a crown nut (Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse part #8)
No listing of size though, from a search I seen a fz1's is 36mm wonder if it's the same. Biggest thing I got is a 22mm wrench and that's too small.

Rather than messing with that nut, why not look at a handlebar U mount for RAM? Myself and several others here have them and they work very nice! Probably cheaper and less work to mount, and doesnt look bad either (IMHO).

I actually have one of those now, but not able to get the position I wanted. Hence, why I wanted to try this route.
Can I just get the right size nut from home depot or lowes that is just open in middle??

This might be something you might want to ask your local Yamaha mechanic about...
