Radar detector

Hi Guys,

Was thinking of getting a radar detector for my car. I heard that the Valentine V1 and Escort Redline are the best in the market but again they cost around 450- 500 bucks.

I was looking at the Beltronics Vector V940 as well, it has great reviews in amazon and costs around 150 bucks.

Any suggestions? Also please share your experience with radar detectors as this would be my first one.

Hey man if it has good reviews by the majority of people and its in your price range, jump on it. I know that higher end models have an arrow that tells you where the radar is coming from. Also, Laser detectors are very accurate and becoming very common. Most detectors can't find them in time. I had a friend who had a $200 detector that he claimed work very well. Think it was beltronics brand. He always drove like an idiot and in a year and a half he only got 1 ticket when a cop was directly behind him and the detector never alerted him. (maybe the officer just used his speedometer?)
No matter what you spend, there is always a risk if you are over the posted limit. If you think a detector will give you peace of mind, it will be money well spent

A better and cheaper option is to leave a few minutes early and drive the speed limit and go to a private place for speed

Agreed, but not when you are going to drive from NJ to Florida, which am planning to do in a month's time. 1200 miles one way and following speed limit will take you forever.

I'd spend the extra money... They go obsolete pretty quick so get one that hooks up to the PC to d/l firmware's... that way they last indefinitely... or until they just die =]

Also make sure they are legal in your state ;)

Also illegal in Virginia and military bases...

Also laser jammers and radar jammers are illegal in the states of Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.

Yeah for the most part just keep your eyes open and don't go crazy fast! My last drive from Fl to the north AL I borrowed my friends truck and he had a radar detector and I was speeding (about 90 mph avg) on the highway and the thing would go off and warn me but I wouldn't slow down and the officers that I saw didn't even bother with me. It was more annoying than anything.

Anyways drive safe and if you bother buying one, have fun with it =P
